Rush Limbaugh's Ratings Have Fallen 30% In The Last Six Months
Jen Ortiz | May 23, 2011, 5:35 PM | 20,113 | 28

The just-released Arbitron report reveals that a lot less people are listening to right-wing talk radio.
With a lull in ratings since November, Rush Limbaugh had a 3.0 share of listeners for his radio time slot, which is a 33% slide from October and from last April, reports Crain's Business.
Meanwhile, The Sean Hannity Show was reported to be down 28% from its peak numbers in the fall.

2. I don't understand why Imus would hold his numbers unless you
make the argument that his RW swill is more "good natured" and meant in "fun".

11. No reason to celebrate
Since tea partiers have gained the upper hand they can be held responsible if things go wrong. Right-wing whiners can no longer play the helpless victims of a vast liberal conspiracy ect.

The once hate-consumed radio callers are just waiting for tea party change to take effect -- it shouldn't take long.

29. Only $40MM/year? I thought the number was closer to $60MM.
Regardless, no one is paid that kind of money to tell the truth. The truth is cheap - but no one in a position to allow it to be broadcast, will. Rush, an admitted water carrier for the Republican Party, is paid the big money to spin the truth and package his lies to a few million gullible dittoheads who will use it to vote against their best interests. That works out to $8-12 dollars a vote...very cost effective targeted messaging where a few million votes can sway an election and have a trillion dollar political economic impact.

32. It's more than the votes
Planting and nurturing the ideas of the 1% is a trillion dollar industry. The fact that they require so much money, planning, framing and almost all of the media to do it should tell you how wrong their message is.

Somehow, though, it works. Rush is paid hansomely to be the pied piper of stupid.

No wonder he's a druggie and sex tourist on his off time. It's got to be annoying to have to hang with the lowest common denominator and pretend to like them.

21. This always happens after an election
His brand of propaganda has to have a "lessening": from time to time, in order to gin it up all over again with a white-hot fervor..

It;s also vacation time, when people may not be listening with such regularity..

His pay is not really all that dependent on ratings.. He's the mouthpiece/guru of rightwing-Nation.. His value transcends mundane things like radio ratings..,

25. Less People Are Listening To Radio...
In the past couple years the Arbitron has switched from written diaries to a "people meter" which hasn't been kind to right wing blowhards like rushbo and his ilk.

First...a caveat here...Rushbo get NO national ratings. If you want to try to figure out how he's doing you have to go station by station and much of that information is by subscription only. Thus numbers about how many people listen to his show are and have been guestimates...many years old.

For the past year radio has seen a steep decline of listeners...especially AM radio as young people have gone to IPods and Online audio and older adults have also rejected the venom on AM and the repetitive music formats on FM. Most of the major companies are bankrupt, have been bankrupt or have avoided it for now but still carry a lot of debt. Not a pretty picture.

In the diary days a person could write that they listened to one show for 15 minutes and that was the only show that got credit. The meter knows when you pop the button to check another station and what surveys are showing is that people (naturally) tune out of commercial breaks and tend to jump to several stations in 15 minutes...not just one. Thus this is also being refelcted in the ratings.

Hate radio has proven to be cyclical...it generally is its strongest when there's a Democrat in office and there was a spike in the audience last year...but nowhere near what happened during the Clinton days of the 90s. It's a dying format on a dying medium...

26. Dying by it's own hand I think..
Radio in general I mean, not just right wing blather.

There is so little variety, even NPR has moved to the center and is playing "both sides do it".

As you say, the music stations are mind numbingly repetitive with the only real exceptions being low powered stations at the bottom of the band.

At one time I was a fairly heavy consumer of radio, both AM talk and FM music, I haven't even owned a radio in close to five years now.

30. Isn't this common in non-election years?
I would think that ratings for political blather always go up approaching an election and then drop in the off years. Much as I'd like to think it's a permanent drop, I suspect that his ratings will be back up for the Hatefest-2012.
