Shut Up and Fall in Line?

by Kurt Sperry

Is that it? Over a year from the convention and it's already time to pick up the pom-poms, shut down the discussion- at a discussion site no less- and unconditionally support whatever failed Republican retread policies we are blessed to be handed down from on high? Yeah, No. Fuck no.

If I see corporatist Right wing BS coming from the top of the party falling down on us lowly plebes, I'm calling it for exactly what it is. That's my right- no that's my fucking duty- as a Democrat and as an American. I won't be shutting up or falling into line or be bullied into submission by a bunch of intellectually crippled naive starry eyed sycophants handing out McCarthyist loyalty pledges to be signed as a condition of participating in a party I've been a member of for over 30 years.

............................

I'm not disloyal to the party. The opposite in fact. People like me are the only thing standing between the noble party traditions of fairness and social justice and equality of opportunity and worker's rights, civil rights and principled opposition to war, between all that is best about the Democratic Party and it becoming the duplicitous toothless good cop to the insane, mean spirited, corporatist, war mongering, anti-intellectual fundamentalist Republican bad cop.

So keep calling us "disloyal" and Right wing shills as you clap ever louder for the evisceration of every principle that was the proud and morally grounded ideological patrimony of this once honorable party.

12. Why would they alarm me? This type of shit has been posted ad nauseam
since I've been on DU. People who post stuff like this have ginormous egos and think they matter. The easiest way to get lots of recs is to post declarations like this, so that's why they do it.

You are absolutely right.

Poll after poll after poll and election after election prove that people who think like this are in the minority. A shrill, loud, selfish, infantile, and massively stupid minority. The only place they have any power is on the web and they abuse the hell out of it.

They are the 2011 equivalent of the idiots screaming on a soapbox on a street corner. Because someone nods just to get them out of their face they think they are the majority.

Social Security to pay for them is nuts? FDR was nuts. Makes perfect sense.

The Bush tax cuts were extended so that unemployment benefits could be extended.

Get off of DU and read some actual news.

79. You can kid yourself all you like. Obama himself has said he's in favor
of "entitlement reform". That's a "Democratic" president opening the door to cutting SS. He should have let the tax cuts expire and THEN made deals to keep unemployment going.

112. Do you need unemployment or Social Security, Number 23?
Because if you do, you should certainly note that Obama's proposed trade deals will probably make both impossible in the future.

And I don't know about your neighborhood, but he number of for rent and for sale signs has increased enormously in recent weeks where I live. That is a bad sign. We really need a solid, liberal challenger to argue in favor of the traditional Democratic values in the primaries.

They are absolute attacks on Social Security which is one of our most successful programs!

The Bush tax cuts cost us $120 BILLION, which had to be borrowed at an ADDITONAL 1/2%

because of the loss of our AAA rating!!

All while Obama takes us into the second decade of these Treasury bankrupting wars which

have already killed 1 million Muslims while pretending this isn't a Crusade for OIL!!

93. "the appalling silence of the good people" — MLK
You won't find it here, whether you insult us or not.

"History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people."
Martin Luther King, Jr.

We will not be silenced. You don't have to listen. But maybe if Obama did, we wouldn't have to scream so loud.

5. The Polls say
76% of the people are against the government.

What polls do not detail is that 50% of the 76% are reuglycans who are just plain idiots and the other 50% are dissatisfied smart people.

So, there is majority of people who will vote to put Obama back in office.

The only question is: how many congressional offices will be stolen through the theft of votes by the reuglycan voting machines?

even if they only moved Obama to immediately adjust the white flag over the

You might also try reading Al Gore/Rolling Stone wherein he confirms for all of us

"Congress is under the control of OIL and COAL industries" -- !!

eh ... that would be Koch Bros. -- as in DLC, Dem Party, New Dem, Third Way --

John Birch -- attacks on desegregation of schools -- unions -- labor --

118. I'm also a dissatisfied smart person, and I DO see myself voting for President Obama
because i know to primary him is STUPID.

Take a look at how that worked out for all those incumbent presidents in the past - NOT ONE has won reelection.

If you're aching for a Republican in the WH, go for it. Try and primary him, or don't vote at all.

I've learned the lessons of history, and I won't be a party to sabotaging another Democrat in the WH just because I didn't get my pony when he was inaugurated.

Good thing the majority of people see what he's up against.

Oh, and just so you know, Russ Feingold is going to work hard to get President Obama reelected. And NO ONE can accuse Russ of being a "Third Wayer". He's an unapologetic Progressive.

What does that tell you?

What people need to focus on is getting control of the election process by voting out local
rethug's that are fixing election's and recall's. If we can purify the process we stand a
better chance of getting our country back from the teabagging assholes who have hijacked it.
I'm not perfectly satisfied with Obama's performance...but the alternative is frightening
beyond belief.

Perry and Bachmann are fucking scary. They make Mitt and his majic underpants look sane.

42. He's sitting on the sidelines shouting and his language shows he
expects the leader to show up out of somewhere and lead him to the promised land. Not much crazier than the teabaggers.

But he's not convincing many other people. It is easy for anyone to shout on the internets.

It's convincing a significant enough group - progressives are so far from getting their policies through it is not even in sight. Teabaggers do have influence. Why is that? They don't wait for a leader to materialize and when they have any semblance of one, they support them.

I'll wait.........................

If you're suggesting that he, or anyone, is sitting on the sidelines simply because of a post on the internet, I'd suggest that you're doing exactly the same thing.

And as for that last bit, you actually believe that the tpers would fall in line behind Romney without any problem?

there is NOTHING grassroots about them.

not only that, they are overwhelmingly southern racists.

not only that, the majority of Americans hate their fucking guts.

what kind of argument is it to say the teabaggers matter b/c the republican party invented them, Americans hate them, therefore Obama has to try to appease them at every turn?

this is like bizarro world for democrats. elect a democrat who spends all his time trying to make conservatives happy.

114. Actually, treestar, the people who shout out on DU are
well informed. We are the political leaders of the grassroots. Obama had better listen to us, because we know what is coming. We keep very well informed here on DU.

I campaigned really hard and at some personal sacrifice for Obama. He has disappointed me like no other president.

When I first began to post about my doubts about Obama, I was one of the few who had realized that he was not at all what he appeared to be during the 2008 election.

I posted the information I could find -- such as Tim Geithner and Obama's links to Pete Peterson which should appall any real Democrat.

Gradually, more and more people have come to see things the same way I do -- not because of anything I have done or said, but because they have become generally better informed about the Obama administration.

As you become better informed, your eyes will open too. Just wait.

Obama is not a Democrat. He is a Reagan Republican.

15. Wow, that was a well written diary! I especially liked
where he said: "I'm not disloyal to the party.

So keep calling us "disloyal" and Right wing shills as you clap ever louder for the evisceration of every principle that was the proud and morally grounded ideological patrimony of this once honorable party."

*************************************************************************************************************

We need a viable primary challenger real bad or we will be stuck having to choose the lesser of two bads in the General Election. We need to get back to being the noble party we once aspired to. Having traditions of fairness and social justice and equality of opportunity and worker's rights, civil rights and principled opposition to war.

We need a leader who will lead and not give a crap about this make-believe idea about bipartisan-shit! The Republicans are not interested in that make believe dream! They want to lead this country and we need someone to fight against their agenda!

16. The democratic party has always been a broad coalition.
The issue is that progressives are trying to re-write that history to be something that it never was. Unions have backed democrats, but most union members have been considerably conservative. Academics tend to be more liberal than the bulk of democrats. There is an enormous middle core in the democratic party, that core is it's mainstay. I accept the party with it's flaws, because the alternative is not acceptable.

25. Can you believe it? An ad for Republican Corporate candidate placed by DU inside OP?
Edited on Sun Aug-21-11 12:00 PM by Divernan
Good grief! "Raja" is the privatizing Republican candidate for county executive of Allegheny county in SW Pennsylvania.

The misleading ad which DU accepted and stuck inside the OP doesn't identify the guy as GOP.

Talk about moving to the right. Anybody else got a problem with that?
Am I crazy to think that DU would not accept money from the GOP campaign folks?
On behalf of Allegheny County, we Democrats are OUTRAGED.

What about you KPete? Do you like being used to promote a GOP candidate running against a progressive Democrat?

Raja is running against a progressive Democrat, Rich Fitzgerald.

27. Why now?
Why should we progressives not shut up and fall in line like we have for at least the last 25 years. We fell in line with Dukakis. We fell in line with Clinton - twice. We fell in line with Obama, Gore, and Kerry. We agreed with some of them and disagreed with some of them.

So, why should we not fall in line again? What changed? Did our perception of the Party change? Or did our perception of the challenges we now face change? Why do we now say, "No more!" Why do we now want a divorce? Is there someone else??

32. Best comment to that diary:
link

You've been on this site for less than a month. How can you even claim someone is asking you to fall in line when you've only been here 3 weeks - 3 weeks which have seen a string of anti-Dem, anti-Obama diaries on top of the rec list.

I don't have evidence that you are a plant, and I really don't care. But I'm calling bullshit on this whole diary. You simply don't have the history to write this type of screed here. Every single one of your diaries have been diaries designed to tap down enthusiasm or create pie fights. Shut up and fall in line? It never happens on Dkos. So don't worry about that. Congrats though, you've made the rec list!

From the diary:

You lockstep drones incapable of formulating any ideas or thoughts without being told what to think by a bunch of unprincipled corrupt party hacks who'd rather sell out 100 years of Democratic progress than find a real job doing anything useful are what's allowing the party to be drug step by inexorable step into the enemy camp. And you're cheering it on. Un fucking believable. You cheer them as they sell out every last liberal remaining shred of the once proud soul of the party.

46. Evidently, name calling isn't a smart strategy, that is
unless you're wishing for a primary that will never happen. Then it's smart, intelligent, called for. The "lockstep drone," "intellectually crippled naive starry eyed sycophants," or "dumbest motherf******," the people who don't plan to sit out the election, aren't the important votes. The screeching clowns who spend all their time insulting supporters of the President and Democratic Party and talking in vague terms (bullshit opinions) about policy while pretending they're the persecuted are the wisest ones: Progressives for Perry!

61. I know, someone should
really share the news with Obama and his team! Calling your biggest supporters, liberals who donated their precious time and money to get Democrats elected and then shared their legitimate concerns when Obama and his Wall Street cabinet decided to veer sharply rightward might find it very difficult to impossible to support him after being dismissively called "professional leftists, fucking retards that ought to be drug tested and firebaggers".

86. That's the best defense you have?
Edited on Sun Aug-21-11 08:29 PM by JoePhilly
1) A statement from Gibbs about pundits who get paid to stir up shit (professional = PAID).
2) The report of a statement by Emanual.
3) And the oh so painful ... "firebagger" term from a staffer in, what, New Mexico?

Look, I have no problem with folks being critical of Obama ... but I have to say that parts of the left are like an extremely needy, and very jealous girlfriend, with ADD and a crack addiction.

Every "bus" that passes by ... they jump in front of it and then claim some one else threw them under it.

And then again, the clown who wrote the article ... he strings together random hateful adjectives, and he's CHEERED.

Point out that he's full of shit, and OMG, its off to the fainting couch!!!!

Oh ... and if some one calling you names would effect your vote ... as in "I won't vote for Obama because his supporters were mean to me!!" ... then your vote is too fickle to begin with.

89. Extremely needy?
Wow. So those of us on the left who still have principles like protecting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid as well as investing in jobs and education and following through on camapign promises like fighting for a Public Option (instead of turning around and saying "I never campaigned on a Public Option") after making back room deals with BigPharma and the for profit Hospital lobby are like jealous girlfriends with ADD and a crack addiction? You New Dems sure know how to charm! It's not the name calling, it's the complicit screwing over of 98% of the people in order to further enrich the top 2%. I have never missed an election and have always voted for the Democratic candidate for president but by not supporting unions and basic democratic principles and adopting RW talking points and policies Obama has lost my vote.

130. Read back up the thread to my initial resposne, and the quote from
Edited on Mon Aug-22-11 07:16 AM by JoePhilly
the article.

My statement has little to do with policy, and is a response to the endless whining about Obama (or his supporters) claiming they are too mean to the left. Its getting old. No matter what Obama says, its a slight to the left. Here on DU his statements are parsed, the positive things he says are dismissed, and then the remaining parts are cherry picked for terms or phrases that can be framed as slights to the left.

As for policy ... its tough to discuss those with people who think that Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid have bee cut, when they have not. Its tough to discuss such policy topics with those who dismiss out of hand anything good the president has done (like close the doughnut hole). Its tough to discuss such issues when folks who don't seem to be able to count congressional votes.

And I will prove that now. Let's take the sacred "Public Option". Your think Obama should have done more to obtain that. Ok, let's get concrete.

You are now the President. You know that the PO will pass in the House. The problem is that the Senate has about 5-6 blue dogs who don't support a PO. So, in this hypothetical, let's pretend that you have some how got 5 of the 6 blue dogs to go along and vote YES. We don;t need to discuss how you got them, I'll spot you the 5. You only need to get one. Joe "Senator from Aetna" Lieberman.

If you can flip Joe, the PO can pass the Senate without him, it can't.

And so ... PLEASE tell me how you as President get that ONE VOTE. LEAD US.

When you tell me how you get Lieberman to change positions ... please remember two points.

1) Lieberman campaigned against you and for McCain in the general elections.
2) Lieberman isn't going to run for reelection at the end of this term (he's cashing in)

Well ... ??

Bully pulpit your way to getting that one vote. Show the leadership skills required to get it.

To be fair, no one that I have asked this question has been able to give an answer that would work. Maybe you can do it ... we'll see.

My point is that if you are going to complain about what some one did or did not do, then you should be able to explain specifically how it could have been done. A behavior rarely observed from the loudest complainers.

138. How do you know
Lieberman isn't running at the end of his term? First you go to his state and you talk directly to his constituents, then you threaten to take away his cherished committee appointments which he enjoys by supposedly caucusing with the Democrats and third you cut any and all support financial and otherwise that he enjoys from the Democratic party. Obama had no problem twisting the arms of progressives and threatening to cut the financial and other support when they were hesitant in not backing the HCR bill without the Publlic Option, he only seems to have trouble putting pressure on Blue Dogs and Republicans. Explain that.

and I have a right to criticize any politician who's acts and decisions cause me harm or run contrary to my beliefs of what they should be doing to fulfill their responsibility to represent ALL of their constituents.

And Obama, Pelosi, Reid et al. are causing me great harm right now probebly for the rest of my life.
Yeah the Repulicans started it but that doesn't mean I have to vote for the people who are continuing it.

Obama is raising a billion dollars from big donors for his reelection. Who do you think he is going to protect and help if he gets a second term. He is not even trying to get grass roots support this time.

BTW .... Bernie isn't a Democrat, so your version would require Bernie to change parties, and then run a primary.

I suppose the "run Bernie run" fantasy can skip the primary part and go straight for the general.

127. All you have to do is reread some of the replies here
to see just how far off course the party has been driven.

Apparently next November we`re supposed to vote in a personality contest and ignore basic, age-old Democratic Party principles. We`re supposed to nod in approval at the continuation of many Junior Bush policies even though most DUers were against those policies when Junior Bush was in office. We`re supposed to clap as the middle class is decimated and soldiers kill themselves rather than face their NINTH deployment.

I`ve been a Democrat a very, very long time which makes me shake my head in disgust when I see and read how our Party Changers defend their positions. The me-first mantra and the death of empathy should be a Republican standard, not a Democratic one.

If we set the ideological standard for the Democratic Party too high, we will be under a Republican regime for the next four years.

It is all well and good to advocate for true progressive policy. We should also recognize that President Obama, our sitting incumbent Democratic President, is going to be our best bet to have a Democrat in the White House on January 20, 2013 rather than some destructive right winger.
