Forecasters urge Mainers to brace for Irene
http://bangordailynews.com/2011/08/24/news/portland/forecasters-urge-mainers-to-brace-for-irene/

PORTLAND, Maine — Weather forecasters tracking Hurricane Irene expect it could deliver as much as five inches of rain and 40 mile-per-hour winds even if it misses Maine.

Meteorologist Eric Leister of the State College, Penn.,-based Accuweather.com said it’s a good bet the storm will, however, hit the state directly.

Leister said he expects Irene to spin its way to the Pine Tree State by late Sunday night or early Monday morning, with her entourage of smaller rainstorms to begin as early as Sunday afternoon.

“It looks like you’re pretty much in one of the favored track areas,” Leister told the Bangor Daily News. “The good news is, it’ll be at a weakened strength by the time it gets there, maybe as a tropical storm. Of course, maybe it could hang onto Category 1 status.”

I was in law school in Boston when Gloria was supposed to hit in '85. Our RA rounded up a car the night before the storm was due and we all chipped in to lay in a couple days of beer and food supplies for our dorms. Turned out it blew itself out over Lawn Guyland, so we had that Friday off for a party. And the pizza place next to the dorms stayed open and did land office business. Hope Irene blows out before it hits NY/NE.

8. Gloria! I vaguely remember a candlelight card game w/ other college students,
drinking a few of whatever vodka + coffee brandy is called, and the radio not running out of batteries. Good times.

4. Here's a couple of tip-pages from our local rag, The Houston Press,
since you're mentioning "battening down the hatches" ;)

(from 2010 and referencing Hurricane Earl, but still pertinent)

5. They should issue a proclamation proclaiming that
Maine will be known as Isotope 003867 from now until next week Friday. Make the storm think that Maine doesn't exist anymore so it dies out before reaching it.

6. We Mainers are looking forward to it
Married a Mainer. First thing he does is rush down to the beach---just like you are NOT suppose to do. So, if you see this furry frenchman come flying by your screen, it's him........As you can see, we don't have much to do up here. Over a 100 inches of snow tends to make us kind of psycho.....
