Even amid global economic distress, people just can't say "non" to Paris

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- In spite of worldwide economic concerns, Paris is attracting record numbers of visitors so far this year, AFP reports, citing city officials. Arrivals rose 3.5% in the first half to hit 7.6 million, according Paul Roll, director of the tourism office. Hotel occupancy rose to 78.3%, its best level in a decade, while the average rate jumped almost 8% to $229. Revenue per available room, a closely watched industry metric, was up 11.6%. Even with the weakening U.S. dollar, the number of Americans who came to the City of Light was up 4% to 600,000 while "arrivals from Latin America, Middle East and eastern Europe showed strong gains," AFP noted.
