have seen their paychecks dwindle, have children at home who, with bright new shiny college diplomas, can not get jobs.
The President is a big symbol that the electorate will turn when they are frightened. The electorate do not vote for a dude named Congress, and their Congressmen will be out there promising jobs, jobs, jobs which the will never deliver, deliver, deliver.
George H. W. Bush, a reasonably popular President flushed with victory in Iraq, faced an economy that is not nearly as bad as ours now. The voters tuned on him. Historically, Presidents who preside over terrible economies and high unemployment are often punished by the voters.
Republicans know this. Social Security will mean very little in this election. The real issue will be the economy, and the President is most likely to suffer for it.
Whatever empty suit Republicans nominate has a real advantage.
