Co-worker today - had NO idea that Jessica Lynch and Pat Tillman stories were completely made up

As we were coming in from break I joked that the earthquake was so strong that it knocked Qaddaffi out of his compound

Co-worker "What?"
Me "Yeah they overran the compound yesterday. He isn't caught yet but his reign is basically over"

This lead to a joke I almost made myself about Qaddaffi hiding in a spider-hole

Me "Yeah I don't really buy any of that story" going on to say that I found it hard to believe that Saddam didn't have some sort of backup plan other then piddling around a farmhouse and then hiding underground.

Co-worker "Why would you think that?"
Me "Because (skipping over the WMD lies) look at the Jessica Lynch and Pat Tillman stories"

- dead silence -

Co-worker "What do you mean?"
Me (a bit wondering how he didn't know this) "They were completely made up. Nothing of any truth to them. Total PR"

- dead silence and an open mouth drop jawed blank stare -

Co-worker "Really?"


If you were wondering Yes he watches Fox News as his news source.
We had several other co-workers yesterday who felt compelled to say "FOX NEWS SAYS it is a 6.0!" not "I heard..." but they have been sold on brand loyalty and expanding it into every conversation. I actually laughed when one person said it and then quickly realized that they are true believers and the time wasn't right.

I shouldn't be shocked that Lynch and Tillman didn't actually happen in the world of the FOX NEWS viewers....but then there was no debt until Obama got in office.

Moreso in the digital age, after the initial splash of the lie, the truth has to be amplified so much more to "catch up" to that original volume.

But they talk endlessly about the Housewives of NY or wherever. And the news they know all about is every child kidnapping/murder case. In the greatest, goriest detail imaginable.

I don't know how often they attach cameras to helmets of infantry when they go in to take over a place, but it just felt too Truman Show to me.
