Items that make post-hurricane life more bearable
Hurricanes suck before (panic), during (terror), and after (privation).

Been there, done it.

It's probably too late to go out and get/order these, but here's some tried and true post-storm survival gadgets I have used...

Two-burner propane camp stove (with extra propane) with camp cook set (and a coffee percolator)

Solar/hand cranked lanterns/radios - with cell phone charger: remember TEXT MESSAGES CAN OFTEN GET THROUGH WHEN CALLS CAN'T!!!

Solar camp shower - and a cooler to keep it warm overnight - a hot or cold shower can make your day

Baby wipes

Hand pumped "mister" that sprays a fine mist of cooling water - when the A/C is out

Battery operated fans (and batteries) - I also have a homebuilt solar panel system to charge them - also when the A/C is out

Paper plates/bowls and plastic eating utensils - no need to wash

5 gallon buckets - to haul water to flush toilets

7 gallon water jugs - drinking water

5 gallon gasoline cans (filled before the storm) - gasoline supplies can be disrupted for weeks after hurricanes.

Garbage bags and toilet paper

Week's worth of clean clothes

Cast Iron Stomach - can eat canned peaches, baked beans, and ravioli - hot ot cold - for days on end...:)

1. swiss army knife, all purpose tool.
No, have not been trough one of these, but always useful.

Paracord... useful for tying, hanging, what have you... rated at what 400 lb strength, see that shower.

Mostly a good attitude and prepare to meet your neighbors.

2. Booze and Weed
and those little battery operated fans, also mini generators that hook up to your cars battery and lots of re-runs of south park, family guy, futurama, and and all the episodes of (so far) of breaking bad and weeds on your lap top. kids pools full of water and friendly neighbors (who have plenty of beer and weed too) to barbeque all that defrosting meat in your freezer. Pop tarts are great and don't forget the can opener and fill your cars up now, right now, don't wait, do it now. good luck.

7. Also, don't forget to fill the bathtub.
You are going to have to flush the toilet. Believe me, after living in South Florida during many hurricanes, I learned that.

8. and Clorox
a spray bottle of dilute clorox solution can keep the dreaded Black Mold at bay on yer walls and ceiling

it can be used to sanitize water

and keep the toilet grunge to a minimum too...

9. Excellent!
I've been through several.

I would add COFFEE for those who love it as I do. The morning after Wilma, I made it for my whole block on my gas stove. All of our houses were flooded.

Pasta is a cheap and easy food to have stocked in.

A generator is a good thing to have too, but keep it up high past the surge line if you can.

Park your cars on high ground if you are in danger of surge. I lost a car in Georges.
