Fred Phelps is a con man
Don't know if this has been posted before - very interesting:

"Fred Phelps does not believe what he is doing. This is a scam.

It's a business. They travel the country, set up websites telling you exactly when they'll be there, and using the most inflammatory statements all over the place, just to get someone to violate their rights for profit."

1. I still think he is mostly just evil
If the reason is money, fine, he is still the definition of evil.

3. No argument there
But it is an interesting take on his brand of evil - he's not an evil religious fanatic, he's an evil shyster lawyer.

2. Didn't he send a lot of his kids to law schools, too?
This could very well be the case.

4. Sounds like it
Everyone in his "church" has too much legal knowledge to be random chance.

5. yes, most of his kids are lawyers. they got law degrees to defend themsselves
against all their arrests. I agree tho. this is how they support themselves. They get arrested then sue for damages and live off the damamge awards.

6. Yes, he did.
Fred was a lawyer, but was disbarred. Many of the kids went to law school as did their spouses. The family created its own law firm, Phelps Chartered, and it is that law firm that files law suits on behalf of Westboro Baptist. The law suits are the prime money making operation that permit Westboro, and Phelps Chartered, to stay in business, so to speak. The person who wrote the article is correct that the protests are intended to provoke situations favorable to law suits, especially 1st Amendment law suits, brought by Westboro Baptist Church. Many people will settle rather than go to expense of lawyers and court.

7. I think it's clearly the case
Does he really believe in his con, are is it all fantasy, or after a while can they no longer tell fact from fiction... who knows. After a while even the con usually ends up believing in his own game.
