they were good for hunting mice and rats.

The Royal Navy didn't put an end to cats and other pets on board ship until 1975:

7. Cats don't like getting wet. I'm sure it was inside the cabin but I saw pictures
of that boat on the tv and that was a pretty small boat.

12. I'd have NEVER believed it without that video!
Incidentally, I recall a photo that occasionally appeared on some DU postings a while back. It showed a mother cat with her kitten, and both nestled contentedly in a bathroom sink. Was that photo yours? And if so, would you please post it again here?
