Made it through the night
Edited on Sun Aug-28-11 07:08 AM by Renew Deal
I'm on LI. I just woke up and have looked around in every direction. The worst damage I've seen is a large tree limb on someones sidewalk. There's a good number of leaves stripped off of trees. I think the eye is passing right around now. The rain is occasionally very heavy and so is the wind.

I'm much better off right now than I expected. I have power and internet. It's not over, but I think we're close to the finish line. O8)

2. Terrific news! Sounds like you're out of the woods if you've made it this far...
I'm upstate (north of Albany) and it's coming down pretty hard, not much wind - yet - but this is only the beginning here. :( :hi:

4. From what I've been reading, the wind projections are misleading.

The heavy winds are mostly higher up in the storm, so on the ground it's not as bad. Jeff Masters blog says that floors 80-100 have a 30% increase in wind speed.

5. According to The Weather Channel, it's supposed to get up to 30-35mph here today.
That's not so bad compared to other places, and I'm hoping that we don't lose power. And I only have a two-story house. :) :hi:

3. Same here
in the Philly burbs. From what I see on TV there're lots of problems in the area but no sign of anything in the immediate neighborhood. Power's on, no trees down, no apparent damage anywhere around me.

7. The eye of Irene is 40 miles SSW of NYC right now (as of 8 am EDT)
Edited on Sun Aug-28-11 07:33 AM by DinahMoeHum
From the National Hurricane Center (Advisory #32A)
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT4+shtml/281152.shtml

"...moving NNE at 25 mph..."

The next few hours will be critical here.

Keep faith and keep safe.

TTUL (if power is still on)

8. Long Island is still in the path
The eyewall/center of the storm hasn't reached you yet, so you will likely see a lot more weather soon. It is supposed to pass NYC soon (on radar it is just below the city). However, the hurricane force winds are confined to an area on the east side of the storm (recon has been unable to find sustained hurricane force winds on the West side since last night). So the point of landfall is critical. Since you are on the East side of the center, you could still experience Category 1 storm conditions.

Don't let your guard down and don't go outside until the center has passed your latitude. Yes, it shouldn't be that bad, but even flying debris can injure or kill you. (I hope your power and internet stays up too!)

9. Stay safe, apparently the strongest side of this hurricane is not typical
and many are reporting that strongest winds are on the tail end.
