What's going on in Vermont: catastrophic flooding
Irene leaves damaging and deadly floods, rushing waters

http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/08/28/tropical.weather/index.html

<snip>

Numerous "swift-water" rescue teams were dispatched Sunday night around Vermont, where state emergency management spokesman Mark Bosma said some small towns were "entirely covered with water" and people, including a woman who was in labor, were stranded in schools and cars.

Vermont State Police Capt. Ray Keefe said Wilmington is "cut off," hundreds of roads had been closed, and some homes were washed off foundations and into lakes.

And "conditions continue to worsen dramatically" in Vermont's capital of Montpelier, city manager William Fraser said Sunday night, noting National Weather Service warnings of rising river waters that have spurred evacuations and will cause "major flooding" downtown early Monday morning.

"The conditions today have been awful," Bosma said. "Water is pretty much everywhere."

At least see the first video below, it's unbelievable.

1. I saw the footage from Brattleboro, pretty awful... :(
I went to school near there and couldn't help noticing that the CNN reporter couldn't pronounce it... :eyes:

Thanks for the information... :hi:

3. YW, yes it's sad to see a beautiful place going through this.
I have no ties to Vermont, but what people there are going through is so awful.

2. We live across the river from Brattleboro and the Whetstone Brook
is always a cause for concern when there is heavy rain whether it's hurricane generated or not. It has flooded before, but never like this. I suspect the ground was completely saturated from the rain we've had this month and couldn't absorb anymore. Unfortunately, the brook - which really is just a small stream of water most of the time - runs through a couple of mobile home parks, a couple of senior citizen housing projects and snakes through town at the backs of houses and businesses until it reaches the Connecticut River. I have to go over and check out an antique shop where I sell stuff and I won't be surprised to learn mobiles homes and maybe a couple of houses have been lost. What makes it doubly sad is the town also had a devastating fire on Main Street a few months ago and half of one side of the street is now under reconstruction.

4. I'm so sorry, Vinca.
My thoughts are surely with you, and I'm sure lots of others are hoping the best for you and your neighbors too.

5. Don't feel sorry for me - I'm just fine. We live on a hill and nothing happened.
I am concerned about a charity thrift shop that looks like it took a direct hit though . . . so I'll add their web site if anyone wants to make contributions.

11. You're right - it's very WET hype.
Maybe hype is their new term for catastrophic flood.

I have news for the hypaholics - this IS the flood of a lifetime. The last one comparable was in 1927.

I have it on good authority from all the armchair meteorologists at DU that Irene was completely overhyped and nothing but a "mere thunderstorm". Thus, there simply can't be any major problems with flooding or anything else associated with this storm. I mean, I know these brilliant minds we have here wouldn't just be completely full of crap or anything...so, wow, Vermont, stop whining so much about your little baby thunderstorms. People who live in Florida have to walk uphill both ways in the middle of Cat 5 hurricanes to get their storm supplies and you guys get your shoes wet in a little trickle of water or two and you cry and cry about it. Geez.

(And for the humor-impaired... :sarcasm: :sarcasm: :sarcasm: )

(And in all seriousness, best wishes for a speedy resolution for Vermont DUers and others dealing with the very serious aftermath of "Thunderstorm Irene".)

After this past week, I'm coming to the conclusion that maybe *some* Floridians and Californians are just attention-whores. Ok, and a few New Yorkers too.

(Faux macho posers with an axe to grind.) Er, I mean "experts".

I heard that it didn't even rain last weekend. We have all been suckered.

12. I know New Englanders can deal with this,
I just don't want to see this ignored before people are even aware of it. I'm glad that it's being talked about on tv this morning. I wasn't so sure it would be.

Btw for general info, I saw on twitter that those in VT who want to volunteer can call "211". Just passing it on.

15. Kick for the afternoon crowd to see the vids if interested.
Most of the vids won't post here because they're not from youtube.
