Texas Gov. Perry became a millionaire while serving in office
Since his first race for office more than a quarter-century ago, Gov. Rick Perry has emphasized his roots as a rural farmer.

Yet Perry's bank account no longer reflects those humble beginnings as his bottom line has soared in recent years, records show, thanks largely to a handful of real estate deals that critics allege were achieved through the presidential candidates' political connections.

In just about every campaign Perry has run since 1989, allegations of his using his position for financial gain have come up. It's an issue that Perry long ago accepted would linger as long as he remains in the public eye.

"I've been in politics long enough to know that this is just a part of doing business," Perry told the Star-Telegram in 1998. "I know full well, as my wife knows, that our private lives, particularly on the financial side, becomes fair game."

Becoming rich while in office due to political connections. Isn't there a law against that?

4. IMO term limits help stop this. Too many see political office as a way to
enhance their personal wealth.

5. that's what MOST of them see it as
power and money. It has nothing at all to do with the Common Good.

7. I have no idea how this will be turned around, they have so throughly entrenched
and corrupted the system to their own advantage. They are running the country like CEOs gouging the corporation for personal fame, gain, money and greed. And they are the root cause of the difficulties of this country. As long as big bucks are to be made, they will not let go and will do their best to marginalize those interested in the betterment of the country for the Common Good of all.

8. All it takes is: Good, honest people to run for office and to do
the right thing once they do get elected. We also need to start teaching our children civics in school again. We will never change the system if we keep our kids in the dark about how our government is "supposed" to work, or refuse to do anything about it ourselves.

We are to blame for the system being what it is and until we rise up and demand that our government officials respond to the majority will of people or else be tossed out of office nothing will change.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong !

11. In theory, you are correct. The problem is that
'good' and 'honest' people generally don't seek office, or if they do, their image is destroyed by a not-so-nice-and-good opponent's negative campaign ads.

6. About half of the members of the US Congress are millionaires, some of them multi.
Considering the length of time most have been in office, one might imagine that some of that wealth came about during their "public service" period.

That's both parties.

15. Were you aware that I did not mention how the wealth was obtained, only
that they had become wealthy, or increased their existing wealth?
