9 people died in Dallas County, 1 in Tarrant County
Due to the heat, numbers as of August 1, should be higher now as it's been well over a hundred for all of August.

This is just in one county in Texas...

There were 89 heat-related deaths in Texas in 2010.

I think our situation is being a little underhyped

1. That's okay. I think you brought some joy to the DU Texas haters
The fewer of us they have to deal with, the happier they are.

2. Indeed, the Texas drought and heat aren't getting enough attention, imho...
So sorry for the suffering being endured.

I'm hoping for a mild tropical storm with steady, intermittent rain (to avoid flooding) to head your way...

7. i have never done this before, but truly, looking at the floods and rain of the NE
i was having such a longing of that inside, not purposely. but even with the destruction, there was a calling for the same. this is the only year ever, i have allow yard to become brown and uncared for. no flowers. and i am being praised.

it is surreal

4. I think the situation in TX is highly unhyped! I chatted with a friend in
Kerrville (Hill Country) last evening.....it was 106 degrees....again! The pictures I have seen from there are horrifying...my ex-MIL in Houston says the house foundations are cracking from the extreme heat. When I moved to TX for a few years I became aware of the beautiful rivers, streams and lakes. I had never before that move thought of TX as laced with bodies of water. I can't imagine what the lakes look like today. So sad.

6. I get the under-hyped point but what can anyone do to help bring rain to Texas?
Edited on Mon Aug-29-11 09:40 AM by Little Star
I guess hearing that we are worried about Texas is comforting and that would be a good thing.

I am worried and feel awful for the serious situation.

I wish hype could help your situation. Maybe some need to evacuate? What can be done to prepare for or repair a drought? What can be done about the extreme heat?

Sending good vibes to all in Texas.

10. YEP!!!!
Meanwhile the charade of EPIC storms in the East from people that don't even live here lives on strong. A tropical storm comes through and it's the storm of the century 24/7 on the TWC, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CBS, Fox to distract everyone from the government's doings and meanwhile other tragedies go unreported. This storm didn't even do the damage thunderstorms did back in April here. About the same amount of people without power. Loss of life was tragically higher with tornadoes in Western Virginia and Gloucester. But, some folks (who aren't from these parts) need to protect the hucksters and hype vermin in the media.

Epic storm, my ass.

One positive out of the storm is that it SAVED lives by extinguishing the fire in the dismal swamp that was flooding emergency rooms with folks having breathing issues.

11. I think the summer heat wave is one of the most importatn ignored stories -
another example of how poorly the media follow an ongoing situation. I posted a few weeks back questioning how many people have died in the heat. The problem is, the 10 or 15 people who die over a month in on location is barely a local story. As far as i know, no one has added up all the deaths in one place.

13. was it mostly elderly - because I have a question about that concerning my mother
My mother is 88 years old. She refuses to let us put a window unit in her bedroom. She refuses to drink water. She bundles herself up in a jacket when she goes outside or goes to bed.

We treated her for what i think was heat exhaustion on Saturday. She threw up and was dizzy. We checked her blood sugar, gave her a cool bathe and put her in loose clothing. The woman was wearing stockings!

My oldest brother lives with her and he keeps the rest of the house air connditioned, but he can't handle my mother, so we (sisters) have to go and make sure she is drinking water instead of sodas.

We had to put cold bottled water in a soda cup or she would not drink it.

I don't think her brain is capable of sensing high temps any longer - to her she is cold.

She is ok now, eating and reading and watching TV, but what if she didn't have so many to look after her every day? Is this why older people die so easily from the heat? If I remember correctly, the lady that died in Dallas after her unit was stolen, refused to go to her neighbor's house to stay. Her son didn't force her to either. I can hear my mother refusing to do the same thing and my brother just throwing up his hands in frustration. My sisters and I FORCE her to bathe and change clothes. She would stay in the same clothes for days if we were not around. It takes two of us to bathe her.

We take turns going to check on her and I will probably move her in with me, when I finish the new walk in shower. But it is taking 5 of us to take care of her, what chance does an elderly person with no children or relatives close by have?

16. your concern is valid.
There were elderly on the list of dead. Many simply do not have the resources to pay for their electric bills, live on a fixed income and have no one to call.

15. you are right..and there are 19 heat-related deaths that haven't been made "official"
That is JUST the DFW area.
People are cutting off A/C to save money...or their a/c broke, and they can't afford to fix it...or their homeless and sleeping in a car,or under a bridge...all of which exist here is huge proportions.
