Hundreds of red-shirted anti-gay Christians converge on Charlotte NC Pride

Hundreds of red-shirted anti-gay Christians marched on Charlotte Pride this weekend in order to hurl insults and condemnation at the event's attendees. According to Matt Comer's of North Carolina's Q-Notes, the group's leader, Michael Brown, "started his FIRE School of Ministry to 'raise up a holy army of uncompromising spirit-filled radicals who will shake an entire generation with the gospel of Jesus by life or death.' Chilling.

We also have a lot of openminded pro GLBTQ rights people too though. :)

We have, probably, about an even amount of people on both sides. The right wings ones are loudest though, unfortunately. They never STFU with their one-upsmanship trying to prove they hate gay people more than the next person. It becomes a damn contest and they are super mouthy about it...and so proud of their ignorance.

Personally, I'm a fan of The Christos and his fellow prophets. It hurts to hear these fucking assholes referred to as 'Christians'.

They're hateful fucking morons. I say that because I've talked to them and I know them and if they challenged me I'd drop a million tonnes of shame on them.

"Leviticus." AFAIK, the Nazarene of the New Testament never said a word about LGBT issues explicitly. Implicitly, of course, he preached a gospel of 'love' which was not confined to the hetero community.

Leaving aside the poasibility that the Nazarene was himself gay or bi (scripture is utterly silent on the question), his covenant of love supersedes and takes precedence over the Old Testament's covenant of the law.

I've talked to them also and they are the farthest you can imagine from 'love' or 'empathy'. I once had one of them tell me he wanted to see all the gays rounded up and burned to death. When I pointed out how un-Christian such a sentiment sounded, he backtracked and said he was 'joking.' Funny thing, though, is that I didn't get a 'joking' vibe off him when he first said the words.

Charlotte prides themselves on how conservative the are. They even have a county commissioner who asked another commissioner, "Your son was a homo? Really?" when she voted in favor of providing same-sex benefits to county employees.

Even when Charlotte has one really good thing happen, that jerk, Bill James, and other high profile Charlotteans like him always have to say something hideous to screw it up.

83. It is indoctrinated from generation to generation.
They "hear things" from the adults when they are kids and never try to learn otherwise. I grew up around those types. It's damn dangerous to try to correct them when they are flat out wrong. Some of us still try to counteract them, though.

I agree with you. They really need to get their noses out of other people's crotches and mind their own business.

Centenary United Methodist Church is Virginia’s first United Methodist Reconciling Congregation, extending hospitality and encouraging full participation of all, regardless of age, race, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, educational or economic background, and physical or mental ability.

One final note to The Redshirts - if you think homosexuals have no place in your church, I'd recommend against in-depth, personal conversations with your Music Director/Organist.

is also a Reconciling Congregation. There are one or two nearby, however that are "Transforming" congregations...meaning: " A movement among mainline denominational churches to affirm that those who deal with homosexual temptations are loved and that Christ can and does have power to change those who face such temptations."

Whatever makes them so sure that Christ wants to "change" anyone's sexual orientation is beyond me. Nobody I have asked has been able to show me the passage in the Christian Bible that even addresses the matter.

44. The Handmaid's Tale
In the dystopian novel "The Handmaid's Tale" (1985) written by Margaret Atwood, the recurrent appearance of the color red draws an interesting yet perverse parallel between femininity and violence. The dominant color of the novel, red is associated with all things female. However, red is also the color of blood; death and violence therefore are closely associated with women in this male-dominated ultraconservative government.

------------

"The Handmaid's Tale is set in the near future in the Republic of Gilead, a country formed within the borders of what was formerly the United States of America. It was founded by a racist, male chauvinist, nativist, theocratic-organized military coup as an ideologically driven response to the pervasive ecological, physical and social degradation of the country.

Beginning with a staged terrorist attack (blamed on Islamic extremist terrorists) that kills the President and most of Congress, a movement calling itself the "Sons of Jacob" launched a revolution and suspended the United States Constitution under the pretext of restoring order.

Taking advantage of electronic banking, they were quickly able to freeze the assets of all women and other "undesirables" in the country, stripping them of their rights. The new theocratic military dictatorship, styled "The Republic of Gilead", moved quickly to consolidate its power and reorganize society along a new militarized, hierarchical, compulsorily Christian regime of Old Testament-inspired social and religious orthodoxy among its newly created social classes."

45. You know, I have to wonder
I'm gay. How in the FUCK can anyone think it's a choice, considering what gay people are up against? My family was freaked out that I'm a lesbian and threw me out of the house, I've had people make derisive comments when I've been out with a girlfriend, and I don't even suffer the dyke penalty, because I'm femme.

People act like you can just shut off your sexuality, and that you are making a choice. It's not a choice. It has never been a choice for me. I just plain love women, and no amount of men asking me out and no amount of peer/familial pressure is going to stop me from becoming emotionally attached to women. It's far more than just sexual. It's a mental and emotional thing, though of course, physicality does come into play.

This display of "Christianity" is yet another in a long line of atrocious behavior by those who consider themselves "Christian soldiers". If Christ was alive today, he'd be the first to rebuke followers like this like he did the Pharisees.

48. As MLK said
“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends”

That's what it comes down to. People can't say they love you on one hand, then turn around and revile such a basic part of your humanity as the person you love and are attracted to. You can't love someone if you hate them for something so defining of humanity as loving another human being.

49. In my opinion
The people that get so upset about it get upset for only a handful of reasons. 1. They are in unfulfilling relationships themselves. 2. They are seeking to control others for their own purposes, something that religion has always excelled at. 3. They gain a sense of power in their own lives by feeling superior to others.

would probably be haranguing these guys for being intolerant. Religion has ever been twisted to exert control on people by bad religious leaders. Kind religious leaders know the difference.

They proclaim to follow a just and honest God, then want to shoot people in the street over a difference of opinion.

It makes no sense.

99. I am sorry to hear that
my friend, who is Lesbian, said she was horrified I sat next to her at work because she knew I was a Christian, but realized I was very loving after a couple days. It all comes from the parents, and/or who and what groups you let your child be around. No one should have to hear anyone, especially a child, curse at them like that. I'm surprised he didn't have rocks to throw at you, too! Sheesh! If a troubled or bullying kid sees his parents or church say something is bad, they go overboard and think that gives them permission to do and say whatever they want about it. Sickening.

100. It broke my heart because I have a little boy almost exactly the same age as that kid,
and he'd never dream of saying anything like that, and I hate to see that kid being steered so wrong. The family is kind of the local low-rent version of the Phelpses, but maybe he'll learn better when he's grown.

The thing that did crack me up though- it's a big statewide protest, you can't throw a sensible shoe without hitting a lesbian, and that kid picked me to yell a slur at. I'm straight. His gaydar sucks.

80. In NC, there is no shortage of people trying to overdo their
weird ass version of religion. It's like a damn contest to see who can outdo each other and who can voice the most extreme views. They better not ever claim they don't have their damn First Amendment rights in NC, because they most certainly do. They never shut the fuck up with their extremist crap. It is beyond tiresome. It's sickening.

"Eh".

I'm still pissed that the cutest guys I ran into tried to preach to me.

I expect to see all 3 on our side next year ;-)

ETA: The two best aspects were: (1) a gay-owned ice-cream truck blaring its tune to drown out protesters with mega-phones across the street; and (2) the "peace corps" they had. They stood between the festival attendees and the protesters. Any time a protester got near, they approached and shielded us (in an awesomely non-violent way).

The number of pro-gay participants FAR exceeded these folks.

93. Sadly, there are way too many children marching along. AND there is
a good chance there are a few of those children who are gay themselves. When the child ends up committing suicide, the parents are devastated, then they realize their bigotry harmed their child more than "teh gays" ever did.

98. prayers for Bobby movie
reminds me of that. where the mom drives the young man to suicide because more than anyone, he is harmed by his God fearing mother, who belittled his being gay so much that he killed himself despite being Christian and very loving to others, but she didn't care about that because he was gay and she told him he was displeasing to God.

If these parents even took the time to think things through they'd realize they're potentially committing the sin of cruelly judging their own child. But, they can't see that because no child of theirs could ever be gay!

105. I would like to be honest and call these people what they are
They are bigots, no different than Klan members or Nazis. They want a theocracy in this country even though Jesus would have smote all of them for spouting this insane, HOMOPHOBIC BULLSHIT.

Gay people deserve respect. I hate listening to people who claim that people choose to be gay. Um, I didn't choose to be straight. I'm a male, and I like women. I like them a lot. I couldn't CHOOSE to like men tomorrow. The thought of engaging in sex acts with other males feels weird to me, as it should, because I am straight. I'm sure that a gay gentleman would also feel weird if he was thinking about having sex with females. Why is this? Because of biology. People are born straight, they are born gay, they are born bisexual, and they are born transgendered. God doesn't make mistakes. Homophobes are the sinners. 50 years from now, these "Christians" will be thought of as no different from those who opposed interracial marriage -- bigots. You cannot hold someone responsible for acting on natural desires in consensual encounters. That is why we were put on this Earth -- to love one another. I try to keep that in mind.
