BREAKING NEWS CNN: Pres. sends letter to Boehner & Reid.
President Barack Obama has sent a letter to House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid requesting the opportunity to lay out his jobs plan before a joint session of Congress at 8 p.m. ET on September 7.

"It is my intention to lay out a series of bipartisan proposals that the Congress can take immediately to continue to rebuild the American economy by strengthening small businesses, helping Americans get back to work, and putting more money in the paychecks of the Middle Class and working Americans, while still reducing our deficit and getting our fiscal house in order," the president wrote. "It is our responsibility to find bipartisan solutions to help grow our economy, and if we are willing to put country before party, I am confident we can do just that."

Just rec'd this via CNN Breaking News email.

1. Excellent! I was hoping this would be the case
Then of course the GOP will request and get equal time. But still this gives me some hope that he will go big.

Wouldn't surprise me if he didn't.

11. In other words he's conceding half the game
before it even starts. As usual. More "preemptive compromise." :eyes: :puke:

13. I don't even believe it's compromise anymore...
...I believe we're being played by a "good cop / bad cop" game with Obama playing "good cop". "I really want to help you, really I do, but you see how my partner here is... how about we go halfway, try and get him to at least not shoot you". Something like that.

I'd like it better if I thought he was just a cowardly appeaser. Unfortunately I don't think that anymore, I think it's worse than that.

22. Yes...the debates are trumped and they don't like it.
It's all cumulative ... one can eat an elephant one bite at a time.

Petty you say? Obama craps on their debate, they hold the US hostage during debt ceiling talks. It's the size of the obstruction that makes it seem petty or grandious? Hmmm....perhaps I don't care.

27. Public perception is what I meant.
Yes, it will appear petty. Whether you care or not is irrelevant. Boner will play it for all it's worth, and then some. The media will lap that shit up.

23. So, for a teaspoon's worth of potential job creation, we'll give away
a cup's worth of spending cuts and pretend that we're doing something noble by "compromising" with villains?

It's not a "tantrum" to point out that a number of economists believe that now is not the time to be worrying about the deficit and that the solution to the jobs crisis is a hefty government jobs program. Fighting for a solution that will actually fix the problem is not a bad idea. Pretending that pallid half-measures will do the job is.

12. It's a start
But will Boner & the rest of the pukes continue to hold the country hostage? I can only respond yes - thus we need to know what the Democratic Party's plans B, C & D are after this one.

BTW, the quoted text from the OP:

***********************

It is my intention to lay out a series of bipartisan proposals that the Congress can take immediately to continue to rebuild the American economy by strengthening small businesses, helping Americans get back to work, and putting more money in the paychecks of the Middle Class and working Americans, while still reducing our deficit and getting our fiscal house in order," the president wrote. "It is our responsibility to find bipartisan solutions to help grow our economy, and if we are willing to put country before party, I am confident we can do just that."

***********************

Seems as if it could be said by any politician during any given time period within our country's history (and most other countries for that matter). What's going to change and be different this time?

24. I'm waiting for all of the job-creation suggestions
(from those, here, who cringe at the word "bipartisan") that will pass the Teatard House. What proposals might have a chance with the Rs, who want Obama to fail?

Legitimate suggestions only. I'm tired of the Obama bashing---so what legislation can pass the House that will create jobs? Soon.

26. It looks to me like he's softening up the crowd for a monumental blow against their best interests.
I can read the words, we have all seen them before. "strengthening small business" means cutting corporate taxes, "putting more money in the pay checks of middle class and working Americans" means social security withholding will be either cut or eliminated for a while which is the death blow for Social Security (and probably Medicare too), and every time the words "reducing our deficit and getting our fiscal house in order" has been used in the past its meant extending the Bush Tax Cuts.

And like you, I am pretty sure this is where he intends to lead. Unlike you I do not intend to follow.

Edited on Wed Aug-31-11 04:37 PM by lumberjack_jeff
Democrats want to improve and protect society. Republicans want only to destroy democrats.

Any progress runs afoul of the latter.

Republicans believe:
a) government sucks.
b) destroying democrats is the only imperative.

Obama, you're not going to do shit for this country. Period. You can't. The best you can hope to achieve is to point out that Republicans are trying to kill grandma. So how about doing that, instead?
