I'm confused. So the CWA union supports the T-Mobile/AT&T merger?

When was the last time a union supported a corporate mega merger?

And what will the "Obama is just like Bush" crowd say now that his Justice Department is seeking to block the deal?

2. It might be because T-mobile prospects are very poor
I think I read that its consumers have declined to 2007 levels.....
so perhaps its T-mobile kaput or T-mobile merged and merged is better than kaput

3. I wonder how much of that was because
customers weren't renewing their contracts with a merger of AT&T looming.

8. Doesn't affect me - I'm an Android guy.
Though I'm likely to break my contract and dump the Death Star if the merger goes through...

5. I know that if the merger goes through
I won't be a customer of ATT again. T-mobile's done right by me, but I will never, ever give a dime to either ATT or Verizon again.

6. Useful idiots I guess,
I will eat my left nut if AT&T&T's combined headcount in five years is even one person greater than it is today, let alone the 96,000 the CWA is claiming. After the merger between Cingular and AT&T Wireless in 2004 they laid off almost 10,000 people and not only didn't invest much in their network but decommissioned "redundant" towers that left me unable to make a phone call from my house without roaming on T-Mobile.

7. If you ask me, the CWA's shooting themselves in the foot.
Over the short term, the merger provides a few thousand union jobs.

But over the long term, the merger would create a far less competitive environment, would probably encourage Verizon to eat Sprint, would definitely result in the loss of thousands of non-union T-Mobile sales jobs (AT&T really only wants T-Mobile's customers and network - once the merger's over, the T-Mobile retail stores, call-centers, etc. would all close.)

The result? A long-term business environment that's even more union-hostile than it already is. You thought Verizon was being douchey in the ways they treated the CWA during the recent strike? Just wait...

If I were CWA, I'd be opposing this merger.
