Cry me a bloody river...
Maybe I'm just oblivious today, but I had no idea there was a new Obama controversy until logging into to DU just a few minutes ago.

Scheduling controversy? Really?

Really?

With all the problems facing this country and the world around us, this is the outrage du jour?

Not the fact that the teabaggers are trying to hold Hurricane Irene victims hostage so they can get their way?

Not the fact that we have a presidential candidate who wants to drill for oil in the Everglades?

Not the fact that we have huge corporations paying zero taxes while people in this country go hungry and sick?

Not the fact that we're still watching our civil liberties being stripped away all over the country?

Not the fact that the Middle East is on the brink of war once again?

I could go on and on and on...

I get that Obama has become an easy target lately, and yes I do wish he would stand up to the rethugs more forcefully - on the important issues, the ones that count. You know, like tax cuts for the rich, Social Security, health care, etc.

1. The problem, I think, is how emblematic the speech rescheduling is of *not* standing up on important
...issues, like the ones you list.

It's a prism, if you will, through which a lot of energy is lately focused here.

2. There is ALWAYS an "outrage du jour"

Last week, it was his vacation in Martha's Vinyard.

This week, it is moving the date of a speech from Wednesday to Thursday

Next week, it will be that he wore white after Labor Day... or some other meaningless shit.

3. Outrage is way too strong a term here. How about merely a continuing disappointment.
So the Boner was consulted and didn't object but "never okayed it."

Really. Just really.

The message that seems to come out of this is that President of the United States of America and the Leader of the Free World is okay with having the timing of a major initiative speech be subject to the approval of the very people who have sworn to derail it.

On just the principle over that crap move, the White House should have not only stuck to the original schedule they should also make it their personal crusade to create breaking news items during every one of the Boner's next few press conferences.

You can bet dat shit would stop forthwith.

4. How could he "stick to the original schedule"... show up and speak to an empty chamber?

Really?

*THAT* wouldn't have looked weak? What about THOSE "optics"?

5. I guess it's how you play it. Seems like the President was going to be a victim either way.

That will continue until he can manage to create the tiniest bit of fear in the backs of those Republican reptile brains.

Republicans only seem to respect forces that have shown the willingness or ability to hurt them.

6. You are missing the FACT that The House has to vote on a resolution
in order for the president to give the joint session speech.

Without the GOP House voting FOR the joint session resolution then there can be NO speech.

Obama has NO control over the votes of the GOP controled House.

The BLAME lies at the feet of the GOP, not Obama.

8. And YOU are missing the fact that this violates precedent.

And I would be MORE than happy if we got out there and actually BLAMED the GOP for who they are.

NOT SOME ANONYMOUS AIDE, but the President himself.
