To those that think giving the speech an hour before the game will attract more viewers...
Edited on Thu Sep-01-11 01:20 PM by no limit
...let me explain football culture a bit to you.

The Packers/Saints game next Thursday is what Biden would call a big fucking deal. Not only is it the season opener but it is also a game being played by two teams that have won the last two super bowls. Most people won't be watching this game at home alone. Most will be watching it with their friends and family because they will make a party out of it. This might be a shock to some but for most people an idea of a party is not listening to some politician trying to sell them snake oil.

So if you think that this is a brilliant 3D chess move you are lying to yourself. I know many people have an automatic reaction to everything Obama does where they need to make excuses or justifications. But no matter how hard you try to justify this to yourself there is no way that you can spin this as a brilliant chess move. Because there is nothing brilliant about this, this is total incompetence on his part or even worse it is complicity.

Obama had an opportunity to deliver a message to millions of people while completely over-shadowing attacks from right wing lunatics on him. Instead he chose to let those attacks be heard while delivering a message about one of the most important issues facing this country when nobody will be watching.

4. He can't.
I wish he could too, but the House needs to vote on it before it is put on the schedule. That ain't gonna happen.

5. Ask the house, if they refuse do it in the oval office.
The speech gets broadcast on every major network anyway. What the hell does he need congress for?

House and Boehner suggested Thurs. Boehner obviously thinks Americans want to see a GOP debate more than they want to see a football game. Around here the question is why does Boehner hate America so much that he would interfere with its #1 religion.

Anyone that was going to watch the speech originally will anyway as long as it ends before kick off. Those that weren't going to watch probably still won't no matter when it is given. The few that were maybes about it will remain maybes. Probably just depend on if they want to push buttons on a remote. Most can record it if they really want to see it.

13. No, many of those that would have watched it now won't
because many of these people will be hanging out with friends and family. Most people don't like to watch political speeches when having a good time with friends and family.

There is also no word that NBC will cancel their pre-game show. Now even if many people don't watch that this means that one network that would have otherwise aired the speech now won't.

Finally, who gives a shit if Boehner won't let him use the house (something Boehner never actually said). Do the speech from the oval office if you must, all major broadcast networks would still carry it.

20. I think you put too much stock in football games on TV.
My guess is that most women don't watch football and they are half of most people. Then there are men like me who don't watch sports on TV. If I am right most people will not be effected by the football game.

8. What time is the speech? Please note the time zone.
While many will watch the game, I am among the majority who will not, and have no idea what time 'before the game' indicates.

18. I don't watch football and even if I did it would not attract me to Obama's speech.
I feel better to let the results tell me what the speech's effect will be. If it is effective and people really believe in him like in 2008 we will see the effect on the nation in a very short time.

My gut feeling is that this is just grand standing. I would like to be proven wrong.

23. I will listen to the speech for myself and
wonder why would any thinking person let the media summarize the information for them. Hell the media will disseminate what they want heard over what was said just like they always do. I suffered through Bush's brain numbing torture of the language for the same reason.

22. I don't think that's right.
I have no statistics to back me up, but then neither do you. My guess is that while some people will gather at a bar or at a friend's house to watch this game, particularly Packer and Saints fans, but a far larger percentage of viewers will simply be watching from home. This isn't the Super Bowl. I'm a football fan, many of my friends are avid football fans as well. I don't know anyone who is having a party in Indianapolis next Thursday night. If people are interested, they will watch the President. If they aren't they won't. The date isn't a big deal.

25. True but there may be more news space to fill after the game and debate than during.
Clips, analyses and reactions (selective as they may be) will go on for several days at least I would guess.

The debate (and game) will be becoming old news as the speech news peaks and the two political events will be contrasted in that context.
