Former FL GOP chair speaks out. GOP right wing told him "we eat what we kill, chairman."

And that they knew if he stayed money would flow to Charlie Crist.

This is a very interesting and well-done interview by Tampa's WTSP News. I can easily believe so much of what Jim Greer says because the GOP leaders here are just that extreme. They only care about their own power.

Here is a direct link to the Channel 10 video of Greer and his lawyer being interviewed.

It appears depositions of those mentioned in this Part I of the interview are being taken right now. Part II airs tonight at 11:00.

Former GOP Chair Jim Greer opens up for the first time to 10 News Investigators

"If they could have put Charlie Crist in prison they would have done that," Greer says. One of Greer's attorneys, Damon Chase, says the entire episode is going to play out like a Shakespearean tragedy where everybody dies.

...According to Greer, when it came to the leadership and the conservative wing of the party, "They never supported the governor and looked to turn on the governor." Greer adds, "And I was, as many said, the last man standing between the governor and the rest of the party."

Here is more about what others were spending on the GOP card:

But Greer wasn't the only one racking up big charges on the Republican Party credit card. From Speaker Dean Cannon buying suits and having $2,000 steak dinners, to Marco Rubio charging more than $4,000 for flooring at his home, money was being spent at such a breakneck pace that Democrats spoofed Rubio in a mock American Express ad saying, "Marco Rubio can afford a lot of things, but what he can't there's always the Republican Party credit card."

It was the way the party operated and Greer says representatives from the Senate and House came to him shortly after being elected party leader and explained how the fundraising and credit cards were used by the party.

According to Greer, "They wanted to make clear that I understand a term I never heard before, 'That we eat what we kill, chairman.'" Greer says he had to have it explained to him and was told, "If we raise a million dollars for Senate and House campaigns and we want to have baseball games, limousines and five star hotels, don't you or anyone else ever tell us we can't."

Here is more about the depositions now going on.

From the Miami Herald:

House Speaker Cannon, Sen. Thrasher deposed. Is FL v. Jim Greer falling apart?

At the center of the depositions and Greer's defense is a Jan. 4, 2010 severance agreement signed by Cannon, Thrasher, Gonzalez, then-incoming Senate President Mike Haridopolos and others. One draft of the document specifically mentioned Victory Strategies. The final didn't mention the company. But it was pretty exonerating in its wording.

"RPOF stipulates and agrees that all RPOF expenditures made during Greer's term as RPOF Chairman were proper, lawful, appropriate, and served the interests of RPOF, and RPOF specifically acknowledges that all expense reimbursements of any kind, American Express account expenditures, consultant fees, fundraising fees, agreements, service fees, travel and dining expenses were proper and authorized and otherwise ratified by RPOF," the document said.

Republicans later argued that they didn't know Greer was behind Victory Strategies. Chase said that's tough to believe, and the agreement speaks for itself. He said the contract disproves the fraud charges Greer faces, and that his client is owed his $123,750 severance.

"Cannon said Greer should've been paid, that he tried to get RPOF to pay but they wouldn’t do it," Chase said. "The headline is: Dean Cannon admits Jim Greer did nothing wrong."

Just for interest, Dean Cannon is one behind the movement to weaken judges in Florida.

Businesses Back Move To Weaken Florida Judges

House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park -- and powerful business groups -- are driving the sweeping changes, which will likely find a receptive audience in the strongly conservative leaders running the Florida Legislature.

Knowing what we know now of how the Florida right wing extremists operate, knowing what we know now of how the party's right wing treated Charlie Crist...I find Greer's interview most interesting.

Seems it comes down to teaparty love of Rubio.

1. I was impressed at how WTSP did not hesitate to call out the right wing.
I guess the teaparty types are getting so obnoxious and obvious here that it seems like the thing to do.

12. Since they became a Gannett station, I have noticed changes.
All of a sudden one day I realized they were no longer a CBS affiliate.

4. What these extremists are doing to our state is scary stuff.
I can believe they would have put Charlie Crist in jail if they could.

3. Can you imagine charging home improvements to the GOP credit card?
Like Marco Rubio did? It's unreal.

16. But they are entitled to it,
because they are servants of the people who pay for it, and the people who pay for it are either investors, who make big returns off their political speculating, or they are teabag suckers who hate anyone different or worse off than they are and are willing to pay for their Guru's 5 star hotels even when they live in trailers themselves.

5. Greer's wife speaks out....says more to come.
http://miamiherald.typepad.com/nakedpolitics/2011/08/wife-of-jim-greer-touts-tv-report-says-it-will-expose-gop-corruption-lies-crimes.html

"Here's Mrs. Greer in her own words via a flurry of text messages:

"I sent this out to my friends tonight. Please visit www.wtsp.com at 11:00 p.m. tonight and tomorrow night for a hard-hitting, accurate investigative report months in the making that will finally expose how some of your most prominent elected officials, consultants and lobbyists orchestrated the takedown of an honorable chairman, husband and father to cover their own corruption, lies and crimes. This is just the beginning. Wait for the book...

"Jim and I were interviewed and the producers felt the media at large had ignored the injustice to our family while glossing over the real corruption within the party, some of its elected officials, lobbyists and consultants. Jim was merely the scapegoat due to him protecting Crist. Other reporters are now calling as the see what this really is. The biggest story is yet to unfold."

It does sound like Shakespearean tragedy in which everyone dies.

6. The 11:00 interview.....Crist turned his back on him.
http://www.wtsp.com/investigators/article/208541/34/Ousted-GOP-leader-tells-10-News-Investigators-party-leaders-lied

"We approached Charlie Crist back in 2010, after Greer was arrested. Greer's attorney was saying Crist knew about the plan and even suggested it, but the Governor said "it is sad when people in a desperate situation say desperate things."

Greer's wife, Lisa, says it was the former Governor who was saying desperate things.

Lisa Greer says, "I thought he was a part of my family. I named my youngest son for him. I thought he would be part of my family forever. We had some wonderful times but, when it came right down to it he sacrificed my husband on the altar of his own ambition and protecting his career."

In order for the conservative wing of the Florida Republican Party to undo Charlie Crist's career and Senate bid they had to get rid of Greer. Greer wouldn't leave without a 'hold harmless' agreement which the party drew up."

AG Bill McCollum led the attack. I have a feeling there will be many heads rolling before this is over. As Greer says he knows where the bodies are.

10. Oh yeah. From TPM
"Mason said that party lawyer Jason Gonzalez wouldn't answer many of the questions he had about a $123,750 severance package that Greer signed with Gonzalez, House Speaker Dean Cannon and state Sen. John Thrasher.

That agreement, the Herald reports, is at the center of Greer's legal strategy. It stipulates that the Republican Party of Florida agreed that all expenditures made during Greer's term as chair "were proper, lawful, appropriate, and served the interests of RPOF, and RPOF specifically acknowledges that all expense reimbursements of any kind, American Express account expenditures, consultant fees, fundraising fees, agreements, service fees, travel and dining expenses were proper and authorized and otherwise ratified by RPOF." Prosecutors alleged that Greer set up the company Victory Strategies as a straw company. Cannon said he didn't know about Greer's involvement with Victory Strategies.

"It was cute because Dean Cannon did defer some questions saying, 'you'll have to ask Mr. Gonzalez. And Thrasher sometimes said, 'you'll have to ask Mr. Gonzalez.' And when we asked Mr. Gonzalez, he said 'Well, it's attorney-client privilege. It's protected. We can't disclose it," Mason told the Herald.

"You know what, thank you very much," Mason said he felt like telling Gonzalez. "Wait till I get your behind in front of a jury."

Looks like their behinds are going in front of a jury.

13. RPOF has told everyone to keep their mouths shut.
Trouble is all those pesky depositions are going on right now.

"The Republican Party of Florida has ordered everyone involved in the case to keep their mouths shut. But some Republicans not directly connected to the case have been raising concerns about what they say is the one-sided nature of the WTSP piece.

They say party leaders such as Sen. John Thrasher (who succeeded Greer), current House Speaker Dean Cannon and current Senate President Mike Haridopolos clearly knew nothing of the fundraising deal with Victory Strategies, which Greer set up with then executive director Delmar Johnson, who is testifying for the prosecution. Party leaders admit they disliked Greer and they say that's proof they didn't know about the deal -- because they would have blown the whistle a long time ago.

Republicans also say that Greer is muddying the waters over his alleged saving of party money because he misspent a good deal of it as well; and fundraising under him wasn't as robust as it could have been (we'll have to check the numbers, but what makes such an analysis difficult is the fluctuation in fundraising in non-election years, presidential election years, gubernatorial election years and the funds raised in the party's federal account and state account, which has two sub-accounts for state House and Senate races).

..."In the meantime, as we noted yesterday, this is bad news for LeMieux during campaign season. And if this keeps up, there's a good chance he'll be deposed (a nightmare for a candidate -- just ask Gov. Rick Scott about depositions).

15. But did you catch in the video that Crist turned his back on Greer?
That surprised me a great deal. Greer was between Crist and the extremists on the right. But he did not toe the line...and he will probably go to jail while the teabaggers finish off what is left of our state.
