A Spring Valley, New York, family was mistakenly displaced from their house early Thursday morning after a troop of armed officers looking for drugs reportedly entered their house, pointed a gun at their 13-year-old daughter, threatened to shoot their dog, and then forced them to wait outside while they scoured the house.

"They pulled me outside in the freezing cold in my underwear, manhandle my wife, point a gun at my daughter and they won't even tell me what they are doing in my house," David McKay, father of the family, told The Journal News. "It was terrifying and humiliating beyond belief."

The Journal News reports that McKay was later forced to bring his daughter to a local hospital after she suffered an asthma attack during the tense incident.

According to Reason, the botched drug bust "was part of a broad joint federal/local drug sweep for pot involving more than 200 cops from at least 13 different government agencies."

+ 2000!
And if the cops have a warrant to search house B, and they screw up and search house A instead, is a lawsuit an option? Or could I just go up there and spit in somebody's eye, at least? That's horrible.

13. Why not fuck the politicians who made pot illegal in the first place?
This could all be ended in a single afternoon with a few signatures and everyone knows it.

Obama is supportive of this sort of thing happening to people, he's in favor of the drug war, as are virtually every national level politician on either side of the aisle.

17. Absolutely!
There's plenty of blame to go around.

I have no idea why so much of the public support this pointless, expensive, unsupportable curtailment of personal freedom.

BigPharma, on the other hand wants pot illegal because it might otherwise cut into their profits.

And that might well explain Obama's position.

23. Because then they'd be raiding the wrong house over meth or cocaine.
I seriously doubt the little girl or her completely innocent parents or even the dog particularly gave a damn what the cops were looking for. The illegality of pot isn't the problem (or not the only problem) here. It's the militarization of the police and their whole "war" mindset that's the problem.

24. But it was the politicians that started the "war" mindset in the first place..
The militarization of the police has been driven by the politicians making things illegal that shouldn't be illegal in the first place, just like alcohol prohibition.

Not to mention that the great majority of the drug busts in the land of the free are for pot.

I was just saying they wouldn't actually stop if we legalized pot. We'd have to legalize everything. Even that wouldn't stop them completely, since some places do this kind of raid to arrest people for warrants for non-violent offenses.

6. The most dangerous drug in America
because it has an extreme and adverse reaction on police. Studies have shown that the mere presence of cannabis, when combined with a law enforcement badge, causes belligerence, complete loss of ability to reason, severe aggression, marked loss of respect for domestic pets, destruction of personal property, and increased potential for serious injury or death for those present who are not in possession of a law enforcement badge.

Non-law enforcement persons, when exposed directly to the active ingredients present in cannabis, exhibit none of these side effects. Doctors are at a loss to explain why, and further research is thus indicated.

The newspaper found that nearly 250 police officers and firefighters — mostly in the Jersey City area — were using anabolic steroids and other hormones. And while those interviewed insisted they were using the drugs for legitimate medical reasons, the doctor at the heart of the case, Joseph Colao, frequently faked diagnoses and sold growth hormone on the side, according to the newspaper.

10. No excuse
No excuse at all for this kind of amateurish cowboy behavior and simple failure to have a correct piece of data. People could have been easily killed. Everyone in charge of that operation needs to be fired or heavily disciplined to discourage this kind of incompetance.

19. My parents did janitorial work...
...one night a new San Carlos cop showed up at the building they were cleaning and just started hassling them for no apparent reason.

Them out of NOWHERE, he yelled at my mom "DON'T TOUCH MY GUN!"

So yeah, they were lucky their dog wasn't shot, and I was lucky my parents weren't shot.

After the incident I wrote a letter of complaint to the Chief of Police and named the officer, time, and date. I went out of my way to make sure that the letter was polite, professional and businesslike, but I did state that he "yelled 'Don't touch my gun'..", because that is exactly what he did.

The letter included full information on my parents' credentials and the name / contact info for the building owner.

The chief never replied to the letter.

25. Of course not. That would imply that there is even the slightest
bit of supervision in law enforcement. There isn't. Cops get away with anything just because they wear a badge.

Or sued into destitution. Either way.

And before someone gets up in arms over my hardline attitude towards this kind of shit, let me just say, my brother is a cop.

And if he *ever* was a party to this sort of egregious abuse, I would not only disown him, I would be the first one offering to testify on the behalf of the victims.

Ridiculous. The War on Drugs needs to go but the so-called freedom-loving righties won't have it. How else can you keep the prisons-for-profit full and maintain the justification of a police state?

Law enforcement ceased to be police a long time ago, when they adopted military hardware and tactics.
