There is no doubt in my mind that he would be with the OWS protesters. I believe he would view this occupation as one of the most important struggles in our collective history.
I've never been keen on quoting others, but with Howard Zinn, it's as if he has been privvy to my very thoughts. His words have spoken eloquently for me, even when I didn't know it at the time. I don't know, maybe we have finally reached our bottom, and this is now the beginning of a social backsplash; a REAL movement. I certainly hope so. My heartfelt gratitude for those in NYC laying it on the line and practicing true democracy.
I thought it appropriate to paste a couple of Zinn's quotes at this time. A thoughtful, passionate and brilliant human being he was...
"To be hopeful in bad times is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something. If we remember those times and places—and there are so many—where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and at least the possibility of sending this spinning top of a world in a different direction. And if we do act, in however small a way, we don’t have to wait for some grand utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, is itself a marvelous victory.” ― Howard Zinn
"Protest beyond the law is not a departure from democracy; it is absolutely essential to it." -Howard Zinn
