2. The lessons for today are also important

I really enjoyed it and will definitely buy a copy.
Still as much as I hated prohibition, the ladies temperance society did help women win the vote and gave them unknown power. On the other hand, the sad truth was that prohibition did not work and made several criminals wealthy.

15. I knew there was corruption going on but this series truly caused my mouth to drop...
...at the rampant, continuous, OPEN evil deeds that pervaded just about everybody's life during that time.
Especially Chicago, where (about) 70% of the Police Force were on the take...Geez!

4. The extent of the corruption was unbelievable
Edited on Tue Oct-04-11 08:55 PM by tridim
Everyone was on the take.

The lesson of "Prohibition" is that corruption is absolute, which makes me think twice about today's DEA. Are they going after MMJ only because they are protecting their paying interests?

6. Yes you're right
I saw the parallels with the war on drugs and that's way more extensive in terms of its global reach.

11. Thanks for the reminder about Prohibition...
...forgot all about it, so I just queued up parts 1-3 to record.

The Union is great. Comprehensively informative, and very well produced.

8. One of the new laws discussed in the documentary was a
change in the age of sexual consent for girls from 10 years old to 16!! 10 years old (most likely with some slobbering drunk on you)! Disgusting. :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

13. And everyone should read "The Turner Diaries"
in both cases for their thoroughly-thought-out, well-rounded representation of a complex phenomenon.

14. I can't believe how crisp and beautiful the images from that era are
that they're showing. A lot of the women were very pretty and modern looking.

18. They should read a book about it as well.
A good book like Okrent's Last Call will give people a lot more understanding than six hours of narrated images.

I felt pretty depressed at the end of that documentary.
