This is a post on my Facebook, I need a non-douchebag response..

Jonathan Keith Barrow
Republicans, grow some balls, let the jobs bill up for a vote. Elitist jerks.

Trevor Campbell reminds me of how the senate dems were treating repubs not too long ago. I bet if the capitol building had a sandbox and monekybars, this beef would've been squashed a while ago!

Jonathan Keith Barrow I guess your right Trevor, it just seems like nothing will do for the Republicoans. They don't support anything any more, just tax breaks for the uber rich it seems. They want to take us back to the 60's or something, I just don't get it.

Trevor Campbell Then the question becomes, why should they pay more than they already do? A lot of people like to say 'most rich people don't actually pay', but there's no data to back it up, and when the data that is there indicates that the top 10 % of earners pay 50% of the taxes brought in, it makes further increase harder to justify, which is why a lot of folks that like the idea are using terms like 'fair share'...

Jonathan Keith Barrow They should pay more because they are making so much more. This right here pretty much sums it up:

Bob Barrow So what? Top 1% still paying about 40% of all income taxes. Top5% pays around 60%. Top 10% is paying 70% of all government income.

1. I call bullshit on those charts
income went UP for the bottom and middle fifths?

No it didn't.

Either the CBO is full of horse hockey or the chart is out of context. the entire bottom 99 have steadily lost income and wealth.

2. They seem to be trying to talk about a few different things here.
"All government income", "taxes", and "federal income taxes" are three different things.

5. The whole basis of the progressive tax rate system.
Is that people that gain more from stability and regulation of commerce pay in more gross dollars to maintain that stability. As long as the rich feel that their security details and public paid police will protect them and their assets, don't expect any change. The view of many among the rich, not all, that they can somehow have an island of calm and safety while the country becomes impoverished around them is utter foolishness. Most of those people went to the best schools, but they learned nothing from history and how revolutions start when masses of populations become impoverished and desperate. Look worldwide, if things keep going to hell, there is no where the rich can run to hide and be secure and safe.

3. Tell him that as much as HE might believe Paris Hilton works harder than him,
and therefore deserves tax breaks THAT HE DOES NOT ENJOY, the majority of hard working Americans disagree. Paris can easily survive with less, and we are growing weary of asking little old ladies to do more with less (again). Taxes do things like SUPPORT OUR TROOPS (at least a hell of a lot more than a fucking yellow magnetic ribbon that was in all likelihood MADE IN CHINA, but I digress) and pave our streets, public schools, etc.

PAYING TAXES IS PATRIOTIC.

4. The issue is not about dollars paid, but rather tax rate fairness.
A person making $40,000 per year and paying 22% of that in taxes is going to be hurting a lot more than a person that makes $250,000 and pays 22% in taxes. A fair tax policy would have the person making $250,000 pay a little more than 22%. One of the major problems with a Flat Tax is that it hurts lower wager earners disproportionately. A 15% tax on $40,000 per year earnings is going to hurt, a 15% tax on $250,000 per year earnings will get noticed, but there will still be plenty of money left.

6. Yes it's true.. 50% of American households pay no federal income tax
that statement is absolutely true. It's also true that that 50% controls 2% of the wealth in this nation. Which means if the top 50% aren't paying 98% of the fucking taxes they are not paying their fair share.

And any asshole who thinks that the wealthy actually pay the rate they're supposed to is a fucking idiot. They pay millions to accountants so they can loophole their way around 10s of millions in taxes.

You are never going to win with these people. Anyone who thinks that someone who is working 2 jobs, and still has to decide whether to buy medication or food this week should start paying more taxes, while the guy who is deciding whether he wants the silver or gold faucets for his yacht should be paying less is fucking brain dead. It's as simple as that.

What you have here in this nation is a bunch of rich fucking assholes. Maybe 400,000 of them who want to live in a society where they are allowed to make as much money as possible, but do not want to do anything to help perpetuate that same society. It's the rich that are looking for a free ride. It's the rich who are "anti-American". It's the rich who want to drain this country of all it's resources in the name of having an extra zero on their Swiss Bank account.

If you really want to put them on the spot ask about their religion. If nothing else it's always fun to watch these Christians try to equate Jesus with Greed.

7. Here was my response.
Here it is:

Jonathan Keith Barrow The top 1% controls 42% of the wealth in this country. The top 5% controls 69% of the wealth. The top 10% controls 80% of the wealth. You, me, and 80% of the country, we control a whopping 7% of the wealth. Yeah, I think the fat cats are doing just fine and could stand to pitch in a bit more in taxes. It's the people, resources and opportunity of this country that makes their wealth possible.

9. Republican apologists love to twist the disparity-of-income issue
Edited on Thu Oct-06-11 09:47 PM by 0rganism
because that's really what this is. When the top 5% earns over 50% of the AGI, I fucking expect them to pay at least 60% of the income taxes, and more because they can damn well afford it. Meanwhile, the rest of us get disproportionately burdened by flat sales and service taxes, not to mention the FICA payroll tax.

Some people just don't understand the concepts of marginal utility, disposable income, and progressive taxation. And more often than not, these people are not in the top 5%, they're just willing dupes of the rich republicons.
