That's messed up.

2. I am no expert in Mormon practices, but first, I thought they got rid of that prohibition, and
second, Utah "State" isn't a Mormon school--it's a state school, and it probably gets some federal funding too, as most if not all of them do.

BYU is a Mormon School.

The Aggies have had African American football players since the 1960s, at least.

The mormons began allowing blacks to hold the priesthood in 1978.

BYU, not Utah. And the Morg DO allow black men to become priests, they changed that in the late seventies, which I suppose counts as "recently" on a geological time scale. Apparently God told whichever doddering white guy was the prophet at the time he'd changed his mind about whether black people were worthy of the preisthood (but not about whether they were black as punishment because they'd sided with the devil in a war in heaven, or whether they'd become "white and delightsome" if they were really, really good.) Which coincidentally headed off a boycott of BYU football.

10. When I was a graduate student the Mormons had arrived in
Jamaica and they used to ride around in twos - one American and one Jamaican.
I used to run them from my gate regularly and eventually they stopped harassing me.
One day I saw one of the Jamaican boys at the community centre and I asked him if he had a clue about the history of the religion. He started to laugh and said his interest was a visa and he'd be leaving them the minute he achieved his goal -I cracked up.

18. If you grew up with Mormons, I find it astonishing you would confuse schools in the Beehive Boot.
Edited on Sun Oct-09-11 11:04 AM by msanthrope
Your OP suggests that you do not know the difference between BYU and Utah State. I shall not further confuse the issue by mentioning UofU and Weber.

If you had been paying the least amount of attention to the Mormons you grew up with, you would know that Utah State has had African American players since the mid-sixties, at least. You would know who Sid Lane is. You would know that the Wagon Wheel went to BYU this year, in heartbreaker of a game against the Aggies. The Holy War, however, went to the Utes.

If your knowledge of the Mormon faith is as cursory as your knowledge of Utah football, then, again, I ask on behalf of atheists everywhere--please refrain from critiquing the Mormons until you can at least distinguish between BYU and Utah State. Incoherent OPs that miss the fundamentals don't really help anyone, because it makes you easly dismissed.

Unlike you, I do not rely on my male relatives, or any male I am sleeping with, for my sports knowledge.

Next time you want to critique the Mormons for their anti-black stance, you might wanna do a tad bit of research as to the Justice Department investigation of BYU regarding students loans---and how that prompted the divine revelation in the 70's that Blacks were okay in Moroni's book...

26. I went to USU, it's not a Mormon school
It has a gay and lesbian center with paid staff. Only 50% of Utah is LDS and less than that are active members. In the 90's USU had less than 20% staff that was LDS. USU in the 80's was constantly ranked among the top party schools in the USA - they had a bar on campus and homecoming football games were known for tequila shots with each first down or touch down (take your pick).

Sounds Mormon to me.... /sarcasm

27. Utah and USU are public schools
they both have had black athletes for a long time. Not Mormon schools, even though they may be in a Mormon state.

Are you confusing the team that ASU played on Saturday, the Utah Utes, with the BYU Cougars, a Mormon school?

You don't know much about Div.1 football do you?

Take a lesson and read up on the history of USU athletics.

I don't appreciate the cult known as the Mormon Church either, but I am not going to post some knee-jerk post to mistakenly point hatred at a public school that I mixed up with the Mormon school of BYU.

If your agenda is to point out the hypocrisy of Mormon political interference, focus on the massive amounts of coin they throw at the Gay Marriage issue when on ballots in several states. Separation of church and state, a distant memory in our burgeoning theocracy of Christofascists.

34. Actually, no it isn't what I was citing....
My claim was from the Peterman case. Funny name, no? A video store chain in Provo carried the kind of rentals my comment was based upon. Read the article about the ownership of the satellite distributors and who they are/were, and the panic they no doubt experienced when it was disclosed how deeply Mormon investments were involved in the porn industry. Marriott, etc. They were not the only ones as many Fortune 500 companies were also heavily invested. Why? Because it is so profitable.

Read this whole article, it's fascinating.

EROTICA INC. -- A special report.; Technology Sent Wall Street Into Market for Pornography

By TIMOTHY EGAN
Published: October 23, 2000

Correction Appended

The video-store chain that Larry W. Peterman owned in this valley of wide streets and ubiquitous churches carried the kind of rentals found anywhere in the country -- from Disney classics to films about the sexual adventures of nurses. Mr. Peterman built a thriving business until he was charged last year with selling obscene material and faced the prospect of bankruptcy and jail.

Just before the trial, Mr. Peterman's lawyer, Randy Spencer, came up with an idea while looking out the window of the courtroom at the Provo Marriott. He sent an investigator to the hotel to record all the sex films that a guest could obtain through the hotel's pay-per-view channels. He then obtained records on how much erotic fare people here were buying from their cable and satellite television providers.

As it turned out, people in Utah County, a place that often boasts of being the most conservative area in the nation, were disproportionately large consumers of the very videos that prosecutors had labeled obscene and illegal. And far more Utah County residents were getting their adult movies from the sky or cable than they were from the stores owned by Larry Peterman.

Why file criminal charges against a lone video retailer, Mr. Spencer argued, when some of the biggest corporations in America, including a hotel chain whose board of directors includes W. Mitt Romney, president of the Salt Lake City Olympics organizing committee, and a satellite broadcaster heavily backed by Rupert Murdoch, chairman of the News Corporation, were selling the same product?

''I despise this stuff -- some of it is really raunchy,'' said Mr. Spencer, a public defender who described himself as a devout Mormon. ''But the fact is that an awful lot of people here in Utah County are paying to look at porn. What that says to me is that we're normal.........''

39. Here's what I'm referencing, just assumed you were too.
No offense.

I considered that other alternative too, that the Mormons were simply favoring Mormon owned businesses. Not unheard of. They have a well known presence in the porn world.

It's just aching for a psychological study, isn't it? The implications of the cosplay alone must be amazing.
