In Calif., no more tanning beds for under-18 crowd

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - California has become the first state to make it illegal for teenagers under 18 to use tanning beds.

Gov. Jerry Brown said Sunday that he has signed SB746 into law. It goes into effect Jan. 1.

Currently, children 14 and under cannot use tanning beds in California. Children ages 15-17 can tan with their parents' permission.

The bill's author, state Sen. Ted Lieu, says California is the first state to set a higher age limit. Texas has the next highest age limit, banning tanning bed use by teenagers under 16.

1. Well, how the hell are the Toddlers & Tiaras contestants supposed to get their color right?
Explain THAT to me, Mr. Governor!

13. Okay, I spent way too long looking at that site
My conclusion - still creepy. Like the girl in your post is a cutie. Why the need to "retouch"? The worst part are these are still young and impressionable children and their parents are already putting the "you don't look cute enough unless we retouch" in their heads. There was a pic of a baby that was retouched! A baby!

:puke:

3. It's funny the way a society in which white is dominant in
power doesn't value its own whiteness, but seeks to become as brown as it can artificially.

Or maybe "funny" isn't the right adjective.

7. It's because rich people can afford long vacations on tropical beaches.
back it the old days it was the opposite, being lily-white showed people that you were wealthy enough not have to work long hours in the fields.

6. Good. These things are horrible for you.
I know a woman who is 28 and uses a tanning bed every day if she can, she looks like she's 40 because of all the damage to her skin.

11. I hibernate in Florida
Tanning beds? You are kidding. I AVOID the sun at all costs. I have met women half my age here who looked like mummies from their sun worshiping. If you were born a "pale face" that is how were meant to be. Don't try to be anything you aren't.

14. As a fair skinned red head, I agree
I chuckle a little at all those young women, tanning it up in their 20s. My dad is a tanner. He's 60, but he's LOOKED 60 for a LONG time.

17. I lived on LI for 25 years
I must have gone to the beach maybe 5 times. The last 10 years I didn't even own a swim suit. If I didn't go then, why would I want to now? Just because I now live in Florida? No, thanks.

18. Yet more nanny-state nonsense
Shouldn't parents be the ones to decide this?

All this nanny state nonsense does is make progressives look bad, especially amongst the 18-29, with the votes of said constituents going to libertarian or Republican candidates instead.
