October 10th (today): "A day that will never, ever be forgotten" ?
Edited on Mon Oct-10-11 02:41 PM by garybeck
I saw this video:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=385&topic_id=621276&mesg_id=621276

where Anonymous says the NYSE's website is going to be shut down on 10/10 (today):

"We will show the world that we are true to our word. On October 10th, NYSE shall be erased from the Internet. On October 10th, expect a day that will never, ever, be forgotten."

afterwards I saw some discussion that the video was possibly a fake and designed to discredit Anonymous.

Well today is 10/10 and I was expecting to see some discussion about this, but haven't. So are we supposed to think Anonymous failed in their attempt to shut down the exchange's website? Or was it indeed a faked video? Is there a consensus on this?

Just wonderin' what became of that....

1. shutting down their webpage is not shutting down the entire NYSE.

3. I don't think Anonymous wants to be seen in a video
Something about their name makes me think that.

10. How would you know. They're Anonymous, so
it's impossible to tell who's really issuing any of their statements. Any of us can be Anonymous. Any of us, at least, who knows how to create a video with a computer-generated voiceover. I know how to do that. Maybe I'm Anonymous. Maybe you are. Who knows?

16. Technically, I'm not anonymous. And I would know because
I follow their main twitter accounts, not closely always, but I did catch that.

8. Anyone can claim to be
Anonymous. I wouldn't be surprised if this were a right wing/tea party sponsored hoax to make both Anonymous and the OWS movement look bad or weak.

9. I commented on the same thing this morning, and was roundly
told that I was being stupid to ask. Oh well. It doesn't look like Anonymous is going to do anything. Perhaps it was all a fake. Who can tell? They're Anonymous. Expect them to do or not do almost anything, I guess.

I hate it when people are attacked for asking questions. This forum is supposed to be a place to exchange ideas, and a part of that is asking questions. I personally am glad when I can answer a question that someone asks. Anyone who attacks a person for simply asking a question should be reported. People shouldn't be afraid to ask questions. If you don't like the question, don't answer it, and leave the person alone.

15. I don't have any idea.
It was all the rage earlier on. Now that the day is here, nobody seems interested. Maybe Anonymous called the whole thing off.

12. What would be the point of hitting the NYSE website?
Its just a website. One must conclude that the threat was a fake.

They might consider taking down the NYSE itself, but if they wait a few weeks they might not have to even bother...

17. This could be a black ops attempt to discredit Anonymous.

19. I'd bet on it.
It's a perfect set up. "Anonymous" makes a claim, and then (1) publicly repudiates the claim, making him look paranoid, or (2) fails to follow through on the claim, making him look incompetent.

Not much of a 'black op', but it discredits him in two ways, depending on how it is interpreted.

And the next time "Anonymous" announces something, a few more people will say "meh". I'd bet the "Anonymous" who said he'd do this has a Wall Street address.
