Giant gourd sets state pumpkin record
Source: SF Chronicle

(10-10) 14:38 PDT HALF MOON BAY -- Save this for Cinderella: A Napa pumpkin grower has raised the largest gourd to ever sprout from California soil.

Leonardo Urena's 1,704-pound pumpkin is about a hundred pounds short of the world record, but he still took home $11,224 in prize money offered at the annual contest that opens the Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival, said the event's spokesman, Tim Beeman. The prize money is $6 per pound plus a $1,000 bonus for setting the state record.

Urena's pumpkin is the second-heaviest weighed anywhere in the world this year.
