It should be all well and good if Democrats in the senate disagree on a bill they should have the right to vote against it.. WHEN the actual vote on the bill comes up.. I.E. when only 51 votes are needed to pass the bill.. BUT on procedural votes.. where 60 votes are needed.. if the democratic senate leadership calls for all democrats to vote to pass a procedural road block it should be MANDATORY for all who call themselves Democrats to vote that way.. if they don't they should be booted from the party or called upon to call themselves independent and run that way..
but the thing that seems to be lost in this all or nothing approach is that not all of a Dems constituents are Dems. Technically, all politicians are supposed to represent the people, specifically the people that elected them. I'm not saying this happens often but I DO think sometimes this comes into play when Dems vote against Dem legislation.
and when the ACTUAL vote comes up on an issue if they want to vote against it they should.. but I am talking about the STUPID practice of having votes to ALLOW votes.. this procedural crap that is a senate only thing.. that has NO roots in the constitution.. THESE votes should be be called by the leadership.. in that way all the blame can be fixed on the other party for not even ALLOWING the issue at hand to be brought up for discussion and a vote.

I think if they call themselves Democrats they are obliged to vote with the Party Leadership on all procedural matters, but of course they are free to vote their conscience or as they feel to be directed by their constituents on the underling bills.
