President Obama Shifts Away From Jobs Message to Promote George W. Bush Backed "Free Trade" Deals

Obama Shifts Away From Jobs Message to Promote Bush-Signed Trade Pacts Projected by Official Government Studies to Increase Trade Deficit
Statement of Lori Wallach, Director, Public Citizen’s Global Trade Watch

WASHINGTON - October 11 - It is bizarre that President Barack Obama has switched from his long-awaited focus on jobs to spending effort passing three George W. Bush-signed, NAFTA-style trade deals that official government studies show will increase our trade deficit even as polls show most Americans oppose NAFTA-style trade pacts and recognize that they kill American jobs.

The only way these deals will pass is if congressional GOP lawmakers expose themselves to the foreseeable election attack ads and provide President Obama almost all of the votes; most congressional Democrats will oppose these deals, which are loved by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and despised by the Democratic base groups.

Apparently, the Obama team has a way to win re-election that does not involve Ohio or other industrial swing states. We saw with NAFTA in 1993 the dire political consequences of a Democratic president blurring distinctions between the parties on this third-rail issue of trade and jobs. And unlike NAFTA, this time, even official government studies show that these pacts will increase our trade deficit.

Trade deal votes to divide Democrats
By Mike Lillis
October 11, 2011

Congress is poised to pass trade agreements with South Korea, Panama and Colombia on Wednesday in a series of votes that will divide House Democrats.

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) on Tuesday predicted that the trade agreements would garner support from many Democrats, despite strong opposition from some in the caucus.

The House on Tuesday approved the rule governing the three proposals, while the Senate Finance Committee also cleared the bills for floor consideration. Both chambers are expected to vote on the measures Wednesday, and President Obama has said he’ll sign them when they hit his desk.

The trade agreements, which were first negotiated during the George W. Bush administration, have languished for years over concerns that they will hurt American workers and kill jobs.

Act Now: Tell Congress ‘No’ on Korea, Colombia, Panama Trade Deals
by Mike Hall
October 12, 2011

Both the U.S. House and the Senate are expected to vote today on a trio of job-killing trade deals with Korea, Colombia and Panama. There’s still time to call your representative at 1-800-718-1008 and your senators at 202-224-3121 and urge them to vote “No” on the three trade deals.

Colombia remains the most deadly nation in the world for trade unionists, with 23 union leaders killed so far this year. Says Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.):

What do you get when you exercise your rights in Colombia today? You get death threats and death squad activities against you and your family.

According to the Economic Policy Institute (EPI), the Korea trade deal will cost 159,000 net U.S. jobs while Panama routinely tramples workers’ rights and shelters money launderers and tax dodgers.

14. Sadly Agree
How do we really fight the billionaire Corporations who think global ownership rather than national loyalty?
Ows is the uprising they already discussed when writing the doctrine of the New World Order. They are certainly not giving up their position of power to appease the masses.
My God. Anonymous is our new messiah because we cannot trust the man we voted for.

Proud to be on the side of freedom & fairness for humanity & of those who fight the good fight

17. DU is not the real world. You're right.
DU is far better informed than the real world.

I would be very surprised if anyone on DU was not able to find Colombia, S. Korea, Panama on a map. The same can not be said of the 'real world'.

Not only that, but DUers generally know what kind of governments those countries have, what they are known for, and what our relations with them are. DUers can predict what the outcome of further 'free trade' agreements will be. The 'real world' would be hard pressed to tell anyone what a 'free trade' agreement is.

DU is not the real world.

thank god

8. Unconstitutional ...
These aren't agreements, they're treaties which would never pass the required votes (higher threshold).

9. He needs to stop watching Faux Newz. Maybe he should take a drive to Wall Street..
I still say that Obama became President not because of the massive voter turnout, but because he was selected. By the Corporate Presidential Selection Committee, the elite group, also selected, when that handful of global corporatists wrote the Doctrine of the New World Order. GW was the first selection, the voting machine fiasco and the Supreme Court choosing our US President to further the interests of those few Corporations, marked the transition from independent Nations to Global Order. Those few remain seated at the top, and all semblance of what once was free & fair is simply a fasaad to ease the unsuspecting people into the way of the New World Order.

Obama was the selection. Campaigning & traveling the Country saying everything the people wanted to hear. He was our Mesiah..A black man no less, perfect. But he was still owned & his mission was to appease & allow the people to believe the democratic voting system still worked. I dont believe it has worked since GW, at least not for the US citizens.

I think of who certainly would have become President had there not been a selection, It would have been Hillary Clinton. She is NO friend to the GOP. She never has been. She would have not walked lock-step with the Corporate Order as Obama has.
To the selection Committee there was only one choice and it was to simply know that she was not to be the US President, it would be Barack Obama. Because the selection had already been decided.
She could be Secretary of State, but not President or Senator, She would never have a say again in the legislative process.
I believe that the selection for 2012 President of the USA, has already been decided also.

Just my opinion
Thanks & Blessings to those who OWS

11. Have they learned nothing from NAFTA?
Home many millions of jobs sent offshore.. and yet they are going to pass this?

Makes me sick that Obama will sign these bills with a smile on his face... proof positive no one in Washington has a clue...

Well,, I take that back. They DO know what they are doing. They are busy stuffing lobbyist and PAC money in their pockets while the American people are jobless.

20. Obama will do whatever it takes to say he got something done.
Even if that "something" hurts the American people. It's sickening.
