2. I love my NYC Occupiers, but those in the south really have an extra helping of guts...
Edited on Mon Oct-17-11 02:33 PM by stevenleser
I think the NYC Occupiers are pretty much showered with support here, but I fear for those who are doing this in the South.

I remember protesting against the Iraq war in 2003 in the south. Several of us were physically assaulted, and we were jeered and taunted every time. And realistically, we didnt have much of a chance of changing Bushco policy. With Occupy, we have a chance to change things. I can only imagine how the right wing in the south is going to react.

50. It's very cold here.
I went to my local Town Hall meeting last night with Mo Brooks and spoke up for the Occupy Huntsville movement. While I was grateful for the smattering of applause, it was mostly a cold, cold room in that conservative hall.

10. go Dallas! and Fort Worth!!
I haven't been able to get back down there since they made the move. I am hoping to get a chance to participate again later in the week. I am thinking a trip to Ft Worth is in order too, the folks over there have an even rougher crowd than in Dallas. Tarrant Co is one of our bright red spots.

26. they have moved...
as far as I know from reading the facebook page.

I don't know exactly where they are 'behind' city all.

I would still think it would be visible.

there are at least 3 dozen (maybe more) permanent residents...I would think that would be hard to miss,
with all the tents and everything...

It might be visible from I-30. I haven't been able to get over there yet.

I will as soon as I can, though.

47. Not grassy knoll, or anywhere else where it would be seen by most.
Edited on Tue Oct-18-11 09:54 AM by snot
It is behind City hall.

The location is close to invisible. It is not in a park. I've never seen much traffic on the only nearby road, and there's no parking on that road; it would be difficult for anyone to stop long enough to get a sense of why the protesters are there.

The only pedestrian traffic there would be from people parked in the City Hall parking lot -- and it's a small lot.

I do not mean this as any kind of criticism of the Occupy Dallas people. This may well be they best they could wrangle under the circumstances.

But they need a place to exercise their First Amdt rights where someone can actually see or hear them, and I doubt this is it.

32. They moved there yesterday...
Edited on Mon Oct-17-11 10:40 PM by rainbow4321
and apparently today, the Dallas Mayor went to the camp, welcomed them "to the neighborhood" and brought them donuts, along with words of support/encouragement.

Going by their facebook, they still plan on going back to Pioneer Park (their original camp, 300 yards from where they are now) during the day, and then back to the new/current camp next to City Hall at night. They seem encouraged to be at their new site, saying that ANYone who comes to City Hall to do ANY kind of business will not be able to miss Occupy Dallas, whether those people are politicians or private citizens needing to do any kind of business at City Hall.
The agreement with the city is/was for them to move to the new spot, no open fires for cooking and a few other things but they can stay there for 60 days, no risk of arrest, no further city demand for a permit or $1million insurance policy (both demanded by the city at first when they were over at Pioneer Park) etc..
Guess we will see in 60 days what happens then...if they get an official extention or just say NO, we will NOT leave.

I haven't been down to the new camp but have been to Pioneer Park a few times since they started (not occupying overnight but I go to their marches)...a smile always came to my face as I turned the street corner and approached the camp...especially on my third/fourth time there. Very welcoming environment ( awesome, friendly occupiers, waterfall, beautiful rocks/trees, the life-size bull statues--like a dozen of them!)

They have/had a kitchen tent, media tent, "Occuplay" tent (for the kids to be entertained), a library tent, medic site, and then all the individual tents.

I look forward to visiting their new home soon :) I'm sure it will be just as nice.

46. Someone needs to make a list of all the "Occupy" sites
on Facebook (Foreign and Domestic).

A list that we can just run down and click on all the "LIKE" links one after another, inundate our Wall with them (even movements similar to OWS). Then we can post a to our wall...'These is not Fringe Americans, turn off Fox News and Rush Limbuagh for once'.
