Do many/most kids and adolescents aspire to be rich?

I heard something a few months ago that made me sad. A woman at a 12-step meeting
said that her two sons (early teens) wanted to be rich. One of them said he wanted
to be richer than she was. This woman is middle-class, AFAIK.

Maybe it's just a kid thing? I had the idea as a child and adolescent that one day
I'd be rich. I wasn't very realistic and daydreamed a lot.

Or, what is it with this dumbass society, EVERYBODY can't be rich! THere is too much emphasis
on wealth in this society, in movies, TV, etc... /gets off soapbox.

1. I think everyone wants to be rich.
For some people, (many people) it's not THE overriding goal. People want to do what they love to do and become rich for doing it. Even people who hate the rich would love to have the money, if only to distribute as they'd like to those causes they believe in.

3. I don't want to be rich, I just would rather be happy
and be comfortable. My comfort needs are simple. Love is more important than money to most people.

6. As i said, for most people, it's not the overriding goal
but if you could be happy, comfortable in love AND rich would you turn it down?

The think about being rich is that if you really don't want the money, it's not hard to get rid of.

2. I don't recall it ever occurring to me as a child..
But then I've never really been about money, always much more interested in ideas.

4. Any kid who has worked that first shitty job wants to be rich
and "rich" is defined as not having to work for a living, as well as buying all the kid toys they want.

It's normal. It goes away the first time they meet some entitled creep who inherited money.

5. Well better that than they want to do drugs
Aspiring to be rich will hopefully keep them on the straight and narrow. That would be a good thing.

10. One prime way of getting rich is fucking over every single person you come in contact with..
Frankly I'd rather deal with the average stoner than the average billionaire.

8. Wonder what the generational difference is
I'm a late 80s Gen Y, and I grew up just ASSUMING I would be rich. Many of my friends felt the same. There wasn't anything malicious or aggressive about it, we really just had a default perspective that somehow we would wind up wealthy no matter what field or area of work we got into.

I think there's at least something that is just existential to the idea, and then that itself is exacerbated by the wealth craze and obsession of the United States in particular. You don't really believe, as a child, that one day you'll die, or that you COULD become seriously injured, or sick, or that something very bad could essentially ruin your life. And I think that we let the idea of an assumption of future wealth creep into this mindset too...you KNOW that not everyone can be rich. You see it all around you. But you're just sure that you are the exception.

It's too bad. We could really use, as a country, a far healthier perspective in our attitude toward money and wealth and how that relates to being a decent human being.

9. Back in the 80s sometimes I wanted to be richer than Trump, better chess player than Kasparov, ...

...shoot and dribble better than Magic, triple jump further than Willie Banks, and be driven around in a RR like Arthur.

No I just wish I could play poker as well as Phil Ivy.

11. Interesting question.
I suspect that most youngsters hope to be powerful. That might be in the context of athletics, or as a musician. And, because money is a form of power in our culture, I think that it is included here.

12. nephew that has/had a bad upbringing, totally missed up and out of control
he was in juvie for year and half, and really such a good place for him. people that say it is a holding pen are wrong. there are so many programs and so many different ways they try to help the kids. i am very impressed.

the healthiest thing i heard and what gives me such hope is his realistic wants of the world from here on out. he use to go for the rich, football star, whatever. now he is looking at education in a normal field he thinks will make him happy and not high expectations but contentment.

most kids dream about being rich.

yet... the ones i talk to also understand reality and looking for stability. dream is just dreaming for most.
