Why(and how) Steve Jobs Never Had License Plates on His Car
Now comes a story, in the aftermath of Jobs' death, about one of his differences: the legend of how he tooled around Silicon Valley in a Mercedes with no license plates. The stories are legion -- that he parked in a handicapped-only spot at Apple headquarters; that he was just daring California police to nail him.

But David Heath of iTWire says he has heard the definitive version of the story from Jon Callas, now chief technology officer at a digital security firm called Entrust, who used to work with Jobs at Apple.

It turns out there's a provision in California regulations that give one six months to get license plates for a new car, and Jobs took advantage of it. Yes, he leased a silver Mercedes SL55 AMG, said Callas -- and every six months he traded it in for a new one.

"At no time would he ever be in a car as old as six months; and thus there was no legal requirement to have the number plates fitted," writes Heath.

1. Well the handicap part is a total non-story...
Police don't ticket handicap violators on private property.

2. It's a "total non-story" because he didn't get punished for it? n/t

8. Depends on the city
When I still had my temporary placard (while awaiting the permanent to arrive) I parked in the blue zone of the Woodland Hills (Los Angeles) Fry's Electronics.

I was approached by a city Parking Enforcement Officer (contracted and commissioned, not sworn officer), who asked to see proof that the placard was mine. I showed the permit, which should have been the end of it. But this bozo followed me around the store (not very skillfully at stealth) just ITCHING to catch me cheating.

4. undercover police and private detectives
seem to be exempt too.

I see them at protests without plates or with something taped over the plates.

13. undercover, hell ...
I was walking around a shopping center in the mid 80s on a Sunday morning ...

As I was walking around, a cop pulled into a handicap space ... no other cars around ... PERIOD ...

I would have had more respect for him if he just parked the cruiser in front of the store he was going to check on ...

5. So Jobs was paranoid? Anti-government tags? What?
What's the driving force behind this?

Honestly, I take from this that he's an arrogant jerk who didn't want to pay the government even a tiny fraction of his wealth by purchasing license plates so he used his massive wealth to... (help the poor! keep the local food pantry stocked!) gyp the government out of it's measly few $$ and not buy a license plate, by buying a new Mercedes every 6 months?! WTF?

10. Yeah that too. The bad karma he must have from denying REAL handicapped people from their spot
Breathtaking arrogance at both the fates and real life.....

I've lived with genius, I know genius. They are often real assholes and I often wonder at how karma takes such folks down.... And Steve Jobs was a Buddhist! Wowza.

12. You can still get a ticket with no license plate
There has to be a piece of paper tapes to the window with the license number on it and the VIN.

environmental destruction from getting a new car every 6 months.

16. He was still in his "reality distortion field". It had its ups, and downs.
Kinda like Van Gogh, for example. They "get it" on a different plane, too.

6. I don't give a crap about the license plates
The fact that he parked in a handicapped space is what pissed me off.

And I don't care that it's legally on private property.

It shows a stunning disregard for those who actually NEED those spaces and who DON'T have a chauffeur who can drop them off at the door.

Perhaps he had a legal license to do that.

17. Funny that apparently he didn't have a garage at his house
Google Street view of Steve Jobs house:

You can mouse click around his block, (larry page lives up the street).

Fascinating house, looks like elves live there or something.

Rather than post coordinates here, see wikimapia.com
