anybody else enjoying the lack of google cache?
Edited on Mon Oct-31-11 06:57 PM by Gabi Hayes
it's there, supposedly, but I can't find it.

I did, after googling, find a 'cache' option on bing, using the elusive 'preview' arrow, which supposedly appears on google. I have trouble getting it to appear, and it goes away on its own whim.

anybody else have this happen? it disappeared about a month ago

I went to some sites linked, and they say it's a new way of presenting things, kind of like the new, 'improved' garbage version of Windows Word 2010 they foisted on our system at work

Here's a chat link I found which discussed it, and which enabled me to find the 'cache' option at Bing. much more of a pain than it used to be, but at least it's available

apologies if this has been discussed, but I haven't seen it. any links to previous discussions here would be appreciated, as the 'cache' option is invaluable for me, with my limited skills

I'm binging from now on, as I can't find the google cache anymore with any consistency.

http://www.bing.com/search?q=no%20more%20google%20cache&pc=conduit&ptag=A0D8901801E264E1FA5F&form=CONBDF&conlogo=CT2645238&ShowAppsUI=1

to see the 'cache' option at above link, slide mouse to the right of each link offered, watch for new stuff to appear at far right of screen, then scroll down a bit to get a link to the cached version of the URL shown at the left of the hot spot revealed

3. Do you have javascript enabled in your broswer?
I do and I have no problem finding the cache selection on Google now that I
know where to look. But without javascript enabled it doesn't work.

6. That's 'java' not 'javascript' (they're different). javascript is built
into your browser and doesn't need to be updated.

Go to this test page:

http://webaim.org/techniques/javascript/media/jstest.htm

It will tell you if javasctipt is enabled. If you have it enabled I can tell you
how to find google cache pages.

from the DU discussion I linked, from rabblevox:

Why not ditch Google completely?. Both DuckDuckGo (stupid name, I know), and...

other comments on that link also thought the way google 'improved' its presentation was blow-city

9. now, for further display of my ignorance, here's what I got from your javascript link:
<script type="text/javascript">
<!--
document.write("If this text is displayed, your browser supports scripting and has JavaScript enabled!")
//-->
</script>
<noscript>JavaScript is NOT enabled!</noscript>

I dunno if that means I've got javascript or not, because of the 'noscript' stuff surrounding JavaScript

does that mean I have it, or not?

if not, how to I enable it?

thx

I went through this before, trying to restore my ability to get satellite radio back on my computer, without success.

what else does not having JavaScript affect?

thanks again

13. Look at the top of the page. It should either show....
Determine if JavaScript is Enabled
If this text is displayed, your browser supports scripting and has JavaScript enabled!

or

Determine if JavaScript is Enabled
JavaScript is NOT enabled!

16. here's what it says:
''If this text is displayed, your browser supports scripting and has JavaScript enabled! ''

the code for that sentence is what I linked above, yes?

may I infer that I'm enabled?

thanks again.....

18. Yes, you have javascript enabled so you can see the new Google cache links.
From your other posts I see you have found the cache link location
as it appears when you move your mouse pointer over the <>>> arrows that
appear when you move your mouse pointer on the original Google match link.

17. They put that code on the page to show you what it's doing
When you visit that site, the next line of text beneath the large, blue headline on that page will either say "If this text is displayed, your browser supports scripting and has JavaScript enabled!" or "JavaScript is NOT enabled!" depending on which case is true.

What you pasted was the code sample that they are using to determine whether you have JS enabled or not. They were showing it to you to demonstrate what they are doing on the backend. The first 4 lines will execute if Javascript is enabled in your browser, and write the "If this text is displayed" text onto your page. Otherwise, the next line is a fallback for those who don't have JS enabled. What you pasted from their page was just put up for display purposes.

Hope that helps! :)

19. no blue headline, but the headline says this: Determine if JavaScript is Enabled
then

''If this text is displayed, your browser supports scripting and has JavaScript enabled!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
''

all those dashed appeared when I copy/pasted here, but not on the page.

are those dashes the text I wasn't seeing, or was the "If this text is displayed......" what I was supposed to see?

the very last thing on page was this:

''A browser that does not support JavaScript will show the text in the noscript element.''

I know I must seem quite slow on the uptake, but you should have seen me trying to teach a first grader how to tell the difference between odd and even numbers?

so.....based on what I've told you, does it mean that I have javascript, or not?

thanks

20. Yep, your Javascript is enabled
The misunderstanding was my fault, the "Determine if Javascript is enabled" headline is extremely deep blue, almost to the point of being black, so that was unclear in my other post. However, it did display the right text below that, so you're good to go!

8. I can see the cached version of every search I make.
On the right side of the search result there's an arrow. Mouseover the arrow and a preview of the page shows up and a link to a cached version is available.

12. that works for me in Bing, but only sporadically in google
it's probably me, but the hot spot only appears every so often, and not with every URL.

does that mean some aren't cached, as in the old way?

either way, what a pain!

getting old eats

10. It's there. It works just like the Bing link you posted. When you Google, mouse to the right, more
info pops up and at the top of that screen, you will see the cache link.

14. you are correct, sir, but, for whatever reason, (maybe my crappo inframouse), it's hard to
keep the image onscreen once it appears

the cache option is right at the top, though, where the bing version is at the bottom of the extra stuff, so google looks like it's more convenient for my mouse-impaired searching

thanks!

especially when the article was long. No idea what the advantage is with the new format.

25. thanks to all for the help. it was interesting to see how quickly DUers figured out what was going
on compared to what I saw at a few sites I visited (most responses, even from tech-savvy types, were sort of clueless, or barking up the wrong tree), although I don't know what the provenance of the changeover was. it's been awhile, but it really annoyed me when I first discovered it wasn't there for easy access

I originally thought it had to do with google wanting people to sign up for some new level of googlism, of which I wanted no part

this definitely doesn't seem like a sensible upgrade AFAIC
