2. Tell 'em about the Treaty of Tripoli, and watch their heads explode.
Ratified unanimously by Congress in 1797 and signed by President John Adams.

32. In that treaty ...
... it specifically says that the United States is not a Christian nation.

39. I can see the heads of Christian-Tali ban exploding.
They have taken over and the Calvanism has become their God.

They believe that they are rewarded by God, with wealth, by being "good Christians." Because their is such a large contingency of these people, it actually works for many of them. Of course this usually requires that you obey their rules unquestioningly and take advantage of others. You can help out at the soup kitchen and donate to the poor, as long as it doesn't interfere with your 10% tithe to the church.

This is a network of usually shallow, unquestioning people. They do prosper if they play the game correctly. Hate homosexuality, blame the poor for their plight, believe that the world is only 6000 years old, etc. Oh, and of course you must insist that America was founded as a Christian nation.

40. They usually have nothing to counter when I show them the actual treaty.
Sometimes, they try to divert the discussion to the Declaration of Principles - but even then, the God in the DoP could be anyone's God. They didn't specify which one. ;)

It could be Allah for all we know. Then their heads would really explode. :D

on the ratification of the Constitution.

6. Ever since the Religious fanatics started messing around with the Constitution,
we've had nothing BUT trouble. Prayer in schools, In God We Trust, on and on and on. They are diminishing religion by their fear and ignorance. They are mocking true religion and turning people away from it.

I am Christian, but religion is not an obsession. It wasn't meant to be.

8. Even Barry Goldwater said he feared the takeover of govt by the religious right movement
because he said he knew what they were really like from dealing with them personally. Imagine that - Goldwater fearing rule by religious right more than communism or socialism.

12. The issues with Israel, as well.
We have one who married into our family...distant, but close enough. You can't reason with him. He's missed two raptures that I know of. If he knew I was Dem, he'd probably have me strung from the nearest light pole. Full of that Christian caring feeling, doncha know?

42. I'm an atheist but my favorite aunt and uncle are Methodist
and they are 2 of the most wonderful people on this planet. I will forever be embarrassed for the time my fundamentalist step-father told my Aunt (who is my mom's sister) that he didn't know how she could call herself a christian and still vote Democrat.

You may wish to draw many conclusions from me being an atheist and having fundamentalist mother and step-father and most of them would probably be right. Or you could think "Who the heck is this guy?" and move on - and that's fine too. Just know that I know of christians like them (my mother and step-father) and christians like you (and my aunt and uncle) and you guys have much more positive influence than you might believe and a bazillion tons more than _them_. SO thanks. :o)

7. I want that as a tee shirt.
And I take my tee shirts very seriously....

I don't have any corporate logo tee shirts, just subversive, funny, political tee shirts.

Except my Abercrombie and Fitch tee....

It's stained and disintegrating....it looks like I spent a month on a survival course wearing it.

Which I did. Blood stains, coffee cup marks, a couple of burns and some kind of pitch that I cannot remove with regular soap.

Had it for over 10 years, currently in use as an emergency clean up tee for fluids, both body and industrial.....

My girlfriend hates it.

She loves the Occupy portland tee I got her, though and she'd LOVE this thing as a tee.

Dunno why I had to go this long - thanks for listening.....

:hi:

24. I take my t-shirts seriously, too, cliffordu.
Mine are mostly concert t-shirts, although, my favorite of all time belongs to my husband. He's a certified hermit, and one of my brothers got him a t-shirt for Christmas one year that reads "Okay, You've read my t-shirt. That's enough social interaction for one day."

He's got some other good ones, but that's my favorite. You're right, though. The OP would make a great one.

10. The Ten Commandments Movie was largely responsible for a lot
of the hyper-religiosity that came along..

and Hollywood in general, led to a lot too. Most of the Hollywood moguls of that era were men who escaped tyranny in Europe, and they made very propagandistic movies to play up the threat (more perceived than real) to America

8. As part of his plan to spread biblical values, DeMille persuaded Paramount to pay for granite monoliths of the Ten Commandments to be placed in public squares across the country. Over 4,000 were made. One of these monuments, in Austin, Texas, became the basis for the Supreme Court decision in 2005 that allowed the Ten Commandments on public property if they had a secular purpose. A publicity stunt for The Ten Commandments became the basis of landmark U.S. law.

16. This is REALLY important.
Take religion out of the mix. Period.
Stop being afraid.

As an aside, when my kids were younger I was often questioned by other parents about my willingness to let my kids interact with strangers, go out on their own, etc. My response was always that I wanted my kids to grow up to be smart about being in the world, not afraid of being in it. They knew what to do if someone did something even a tiny bit inappropriate or dangerous. Of course, they could still have been grabbed from behind and pushed into a van, but they'd go kicking, screaming, making a huge fuss. And they had the joy of meeting so many wonderful people in parks, on the street, in stores, at events. Some of our best memories and even friends came from these encounters.

This shows that the United States history was high jacked by Repub's that started their mantra of fear which includes God, guns and gays years ago.

26. When my daughter was in elementary school...
She said she thought there should be a law that said you can't make kids recite the Pledge of Allegiance without first teaching them what it means--line by line. She used to leave the room when they would say the pledge. Now that she understands the whole thing she just quietly leaves out the "Under God" part when everyone else says it.

35. That's what I did, as far back as when they taught it to us in Kindergarten.
I was just silent for those two beats. I didn't know/believe, so I didn't see any reason to say it. Especially the way they insisted the pledge was meaningful, I didn't want to agree to anything I didn't believe.

Boy I sucked at math, but I was a bit ahead of the curve in some departments.

If you teach them what it means they will understand that forcing someone to say the Pledge defeats the purpose.
