Shuster slams Michigan Republicans for making school bullying easier

On Countdown Friday evening, guest host David Shuster took Michigan Republicans lawmakers to task for moving forward on a bill that would help school bullies avoid punishment for their actions.

As Shuster describes, Michigan lawmakers added a dangerous loophole to the “Matt’s Law” bill, saying schools’ anti-bullying policies can’t “prohibit a statement of a sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction.”

The bill was named after a 14-year-old boy committed suicide in 2002 after having poured syrup and eggs crushed on him by anti-gay classmates. The family of Matt has responded in heavy criticism of the bill.

“I’m ashamed of this law,” said Kevin Epling. the father of Matt. “They have tarnished the person whom it is named after. It does not reflect our beliefs nor Matt’s beliefs.”
