Why haven't people called the Chamber of Commerce the Business Union
Edited on Sat Nov-05-11 02:26 PM by Gman
which is exactly what it is? Why do we not refer to other similar business organizations as a business union? They are all individual businesses that came together for the common good and protection which is what people do in a union.

Of course, the average person selling his/her skills as labor isn't supposed to have any such right. Even growers of similar agricultural products have their own organizations/unions. Organizations of workers are correctly called "labor unions". The Chamber and others are "business unions".

Why do we not attack the leaders of these organizations as not representing the will of their members and are only fat cat business bosses and the like?

We should start calling them exactly what they are. This would be the way to un-demonize the word "union" and a way to show the double standard.

and I didn't mention it above and I'll edit to add this, that this would be the way to un-demonize the word "union" and a way to show the double standard.

4. Interesting idea, I gave you a rec but I need to think about it a bit more
Edited on Sat Nov-05-11 03:06 PM by Bjorn Against
You do make a good argument, but I am hesitant to call them a union even though I do see the similarities that you point out. I worry that if we were to start calling them a union we may confuse people as to what a union actually is and what they do for the common working people. I also get that it would make it more difficult for them to demonize unions while also defending the ways they work similarly to unions. There seems to me to be pros and cons to referring to them as a Business Union, but it is an interesting idea that at least deserves some discussion so I gave you a rec to promote that discussion.

6. I have for many years had a problem with the fact that

businesses join all kinds of mutual aid organizations but it's demonic for labor to associate and come together for the common good. It's a thing that's vexed me for many years. But people don't see the contradiction. Even cotton growers have an association, i.e. the commodity itself has an organization.

7. Anecdote.
Edited on Sat Nov-05-11 04:02 PM by moondust
I once had an arrogant boss who one day told me a story about how years ago some smaller banks banded together to mutually protect themselves from some kind of hostile takeover or something. I said "So they formed a union?" He quickly snapped, "NO! It was a 'consortium' (or some other equivalent I forget now)!" Too funny!

They have demonized unions for decades and wouldn't be caught dead using the word to describe themselves.
