7 Dead, 51 injuried and death toll rising in 30 car pile up in the UK

My brother was telling me about this today, EMS and police say bodies may still be sitting in cars..a huge fireball engulfed the road

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2057829/M5-crash-At-seven-dead-51-injured-motorway-incident.html

t least seven people were killed and 51 injured in a horrific crash on the M5 motorway described by the emergency services today as one of the worst they have ever seen.

There are fears the death toll could soar even higher as police said they believe bodies may still be trapped in vehicles which have been left 'burnt and unrecognisable'.

The smash on the northbound carriageway near Taunton, Somerset, involved 34 vehicles, including four lorries. Police said the vehicles were 'immediately alight' following the crash as a 'massive fireball' engulfed the carriageway.

13. The tractor is the part in front that pulls
And the trailer is the cargo container in back that gets pulled.

14. A lorry dowsn't have to be articulated
Mack builds straight chassis trucks also, so your accurate there.

16. I know but I used UK terminology
What we call lorries are never articulated and we don't use the terms tractor or trailer in this connection here. We use truck really only for pickup trucks - small and large earth and tarmac movers etc.

I know Mack build straight chassis trucks too - was first example I could think of. Met a guy in KY 10 years ago who was a car customiser and also serviced Macks. He was part way through converting a '55 Mack into a camper.

That's ghastly. Oh those poor people! I hope the injured pull through without serious burn injuries. Sending them my love and best wishes. I've spent time in England and the people are so charming and intelligent.

9. From the aeriel scene this what it looks likes happened
Edited on Sat Nov-05-11 03:11 PM by dipsydoodle
One of the front articlulated trucks overtook another one in the nearside lane in the fog and pushed cars from the middle lane into the offside lane. A third truck behind then jack knifed. Numerous cars hit the jack knifed truck and were all then hit from behind by fourth and fifth trucks. A fire ball started which took out everything between the cars and the rear two trucks including those trucks too.

Its horrific. Most of the cars look like a bean can from a bonfire. I picked it up when it happened on my Galaxy 'phone while I was out last night and thought at first it said J25 M25 which wasn't far from where I was. Police forensics have been there all day even sweeping the other side of the motorway for bits and pieces both as evidence and to prevent punctures I guess.

12. Fireworks from a nearby Rugby club sent a pall of black smoke...
... over the M5 freeway and that caused the Iceland truck to disappear
and incited the crashes.

15. Witnesses report sudden intense fog. From the Guardian
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/nov/05/m5-crash?intcmp=239
"Conditions as we got on the M5 were relatively clear. But within 100 metres there was a white wall of fog – the worst fog I have ever seen, it was horrific. I slowed down and veered towards the central reservation, which is what probably saved our lives. The fog lifted and around us was utter carnage.

"We managed to stop because we had just joined the motorway and were not going too fast. But a car came by within seconds at about 70mph and went straight into the lorry. We sat there and heard the thud of cars, one after another, hitting each other and thought we would be next. We could hear people screaming in their cars."

Locals did mention the smoke from rugby club but those on the scene mention that fog
