BTD Tally: 40,000 New Credit Union Members, $80M in Savings

Saturday’s Bank Transfer Day movement brought in 40,000 new members for credit unions nationwide, adding $80 million in savings, according to a survey of 1,100 nonprofit cooperatives by the Credit Union National Association.

CUNA’s survey found that 80 percent of larger credit unions reported signing up new members on Bank Transfer Day, an event inspired by Bank of America’s proposed $5-a-month debit card fee that was rescinded last week after widespread consumer blowback.

Many credit unions opened on Saturday, or extended their usual weekend hours, to accommodate the anticipated wave of new members, CUNA said. Credit unions surveyed said they made $90 million in new loans on Saturday.
