A Monona man was arrested on a fifth drunk driving offense after he went into a rage against a pickup truck driver, four times getting out of his vehicle to pound on the windows of the truck he felt cut him off, Madison police reported. Michael Wilson, 52, was tentatively charged with a fifth felony OWI, four counts of disorderly conduct and a parole violation when picked up by police in the 3600 block of Lexington Avenue.
According to a police news release, the incident started about 1 p.m. Tuesday at Stoughton Road and East Washington Avenue. Police spokesman Joel DeSpain said in the release that the 54-year-old female driver of the pickup truck and her 20-year-old male passenger from Franksville were waiting for a green light so they could turn west onto East Washington Avenue from southbound Stoughton Road.
Wilson allegedly got angry and started honking his horn because the offending pickup truck ahead of him wasn't proceeding into the traffic lane. "He also got out for the first time and began swearing and pounding on the truck windows," DeSpain said. "The woman thought he might be angry because she didn't turn right on red, but she said there was traffic on East Washington Avenue which prevented her from doing so." The suspect then followed the woman west on East Washington Avenue to North Fair Oaks Avenue, getting out another three times to pound on the truck's windows.
"He also wanted them to join them in the street, saying something about how tough he was," DeSpain said. The woman got on her cell phone to call police, with Wilson speeding away when he realized what she was doing. She told police his license plate number, a description of his truck and what direction he was traveling," DeSpain said. Wilson denied touching the other truck but admitted to getting out of his truck to "express anger" toward the other driver, DeSpain said. "He said he did so because he felt she cut him off in traffic," DeSpain said. After field sobriety tests, Wilson was arrested on a fifth felony OWI.
