1. Eddie is backing up his guy
Ratner probably talked him into hosting.

3. Good, I was planning not to watch it because I do not find Murphy funny

Let me add that I was actually hoping yesterday that it would lead to M. dropping the gig.

8. FWIW, I think Murphy's early standup is classic
Though we all have our own taste in comedy. Also, I think most of Ratner's movies have been pretty bad - the 'Rush Hour' franchise as a prime example.

What's interesting here is what this incident shows about how much things have changed since the early 1980s. Eddie Murphy's 1983 standup film 'Delirious' had a bit about gays where he used the word 'fags.' And 28 years later, Ratner gets the boot for using that same word.

Images by Tyrone Greene ...

Dark and lonely on the summer night.
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
Watchdog barking - Do he bite?
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
Slip in his window,
Break his neck!
Then his house
I start to wreck!
Got no reason --
What the heck!
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
C-I-L-L ...
My land - lord ...

Only truly funny thing he's done, well, that and a couple of Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood skits.

4. Good, now there's an outside chance the Oscars might not suck...
Like Eddie Murphy's "acting" does.

5. We're going to have to figure this stuff out, and it isn't easy.
Ratner said the wrong thing, did the right thing, and I hope those whom he hurt can reach out to him so he knows he's not just being shunned but welcomed if he welcomes them. It's a tough lesson, though and I feel for him. I'm not sure I get Murphy pulling out, but we'll see what develops.

7. Find this request unbelievably naive. One does not make jokes like that
unless one feels that way. He resigned because he had no choice and his prejudices, I am sure, have remained the same; he will just be more careful expressing them from now on...

6. I find this really disappointing
If he pulled out for these reasons then I am not sure I would ever be able to view one of his movies the same way again. Sort of like Mel Gibson.

14. I think he was glad to have an out.
There was not an uproarious response when he was chosen to host ..

It's a hard show to host and not all can do it well.. Eddie's "moment" was a long time ago..

17. Eddie is no stranger to anti-gay slurs
His 1980s act was rife with "faggot" jokes.
