Paterno acts as though he were not an animal and has rights. He should be in court for his part in this and then if found guilty (and how could he not be) should sit in a prison cell for the rest of his ugly life.

I will note, however, he did have a column earlier in the year WELL before any other media sources would report on it, that was spot on with a lot of this.

Fact is, it has been known pretty extensively what sandusky was going back to the 98 incident.

However, it is VERY crazy now, and they are also trying to tie in the disappearance of the county DA 6 years ago to this, and there is .0001 percent chance that there is a connection.

This is VERY bad, and there are going to be a lot crazy things that people are just going to throw against the wall to see if it sticks for a while now until everything comes out ...

They weren't just protecting a coach; they were protecting some important 1% ers.

I read this in the Beaver County Times months ago, but didn't pass it along because it was still in the nebulous rumor stage. Appears it's now growing legs.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. Remember the child prostitution sex ring involving some in the administration of Boosh the Elder? Damned shame the internet was in its infancy back then. Here's hoping these vermin are exposed as pedophiles and that there are consequences this time!

While I HATE that this happened at all and grieve for the pain and lost childhood these boys and victims like them have suffered, once and for all I wish the obscene corruption in higher institutions -- especially in the form of sex crimes and abuse -- would be exposed for what it is.

That includes the Catholic Church; they still haven't suffered, imho.

My memory isn't what it used to be. After I read Mark Madden's column, I wondered about what other 'rumors' were swirling, so I asked a friend who is tuned into All Things Penn State, and it was from him that I heard about the child-prostitution ring involving wealthy benefactors.

The friend who worked in both the administration side of institutions and is also a law professor was involved in developing and refining conduct/sexual harassment policy.

I wanted her take on Penn State's liability problems. During our conversation I suggested that given the protection Sandusky (and Paterno) had been provided over the years by Penn State and assuming the administration and regents had been aware of these issues for a long time I was concerned that Sandusky was being protected because he was providing a service to donors and others. She became speechless as the implications took root in her attorney brain.

I was unaware of the story you are referring to but frankly the long term cover up and protection only makes sense if you think it has these longer tentacles back to the power base.

The University's attorney was/is also the Second Miles Foundation attorney.

Oh my. That really makes this rumor sound like there could be some truth here.

The university's legal exposure just keeps climbing.

I believe it was a nebraska republican senator who attempted to expose the scandal. children being sexually molested by politicians, monied. What I read at the time was that the victims were threatened if they didn't recant their testimony, they'd go to jail-two refused and went to jail.

So long ago, but it's take awhile for this country to become morally bankrupt because the "the fish rots from the head down." It's amazing you have students protesting--I guess sports are more important than what the victims (children) had to endure.

Guess who is coming to riot-torn Happy Valley to play footsball on Saturday? Nebraska.

This would not surprise me one bit. There are powerful people out there who do terrible things and get away with them because they have money and power. They have free rein to let their worst instincts and fantasies free, with no consequences. I pray this is not true, but I wouldn't be one bit surprised if the 1% were involved in something like this.

Because at that point all 6 of them knew what Sandusky was doing and none of them did anything to stop him.

how about the whole DA department. Hell the whole political structure of the region and the police and DA office come under suspicion. With so many victims and so many reporting possible crimes and an actual investigation... it's easier to see why small guys like McQueary or his dad had so little impact. Who do you go to when everyone is covering up... including the media(?). Did someone in the media know, yah got think someone knew particularly after the DA went missing. I'm starting to see the people on the bottoms as victims of a totally corrupt system. If the system around you is corrupt, then you coarse of action can easily be corrupted. It may not absolve them, but it certainly means the true source of the problems of this crime is far removed from them.

And I believe it is irresponsible to post this given that there is no confirmation of this soi-disant "rumor."

But, it has appeared, now, in the media and, as such, is suitable for posting on DU. Many crimes are first reported as rumors. As long as it is identified as a rumor, there's nothing wrong with reporting it on DU.

(1) Sandusky is now prohibited from being alone with three of his grandchildren. Its not clear who requested the restriction. Perhaps it was one or more of his adopted children on behalf of their children.

(2) The in-house university attorney for Penn State at the time the Sandusky matter began was (is) simultaneously serving as legal counsel for The Second Miles Foundation.

Lift up every rock and let in the sun.

At least to some degree. Sandusky made a relatively surprising retirement less than a year after the 1998 allegations and investigation. Supposedly, this was because he was told he wouldn't be Paterno's successor as had been widely expected. But even if that were true, why WOULDN'T he be, unless they knew?

If it turns out to be true, or when there is a credible allegation, then circulate the report. The outrageous comments in this thread, which unfairly indict an entire community of over 44,000 students, or make reference to another Pennsylvania case that is unrelated to this matter so far as anyone knows, as if such things are typical of Pennsylvania, or which make sweeping statements about the nature of an entire sport -- ALL OF THIS IS TURNING INTO A FUCKING WITCH HUNT, AND I AM HAVING NONE OF IT!

The Jerry Sandusky situation seems a matter of failure to connect certain dots, or perhaps unwillingness in that regard. Lots of people besides the former Penn State defensive coordinator have some explaining to do.

Allegations of improper conduct with an underage male first surfaced in 1998, while Sandusky was still employed by Penn State. That incident allegedly occurred in a shower at Penn State's on-campus football facility. No charges were filed.

Sandusky retired the next year, in 1999. He was 55, prime age for a coach. Odd, to say the least - especially with Joe Paterno thought even then to be ready to quit and Sandusky a likely, openly-discussed successor.

It seems logical to ask: What did Paterno know, and when did he know it? What did Penn State's administration know, and when did they know it?
