Penn State should cancel Saturday's game

Penn State should cancel Saturday's game
Bob Ford, Inquirer Sports Columnist

The Penn State board of trustees, like so many others in the scandal of silence that has engulfed the university, did the bare minimum on Wednesday by firing coach Joe Paterno and school president Graham Spanier. Choosing which cuff links to wear to the meeting was a more difficult decision for them than that.

They stopped short of presenting tangible evidence that they consider the horror that took place on campus to be more important than a football game.

There should be no cheering on Saturday. There should be silence in the enormous concrete and steel edifice built to deify a program that has now been revealed as a false god. Tell the people not to come. Tell them there is nothing here to glorify. Encourage them to spend the fall afternoon with their children.

That didn't happen, and the people involved can invent a thousand plausibly correct reasons for why Penn State should play Nebraska on Saturday. They can cite fairness to the players, to the fans, to the spirit of competition, to whatever shredded hope there is that life should continue just as if nothing has happened.

1. Impressive from a sports guy
Is it me, or is greed starting to become out of vogue?

Can one hope?

14. How is this even a question?
Are you following this story? Are you familiar with Penn State and their deified, above reproach football program?

11. So they should punish the players, fans, and opposing teams because of something they didn't do?
That seems fair.

has to do with higher education?

24. +1,000,000,000 x 1,000,000,000 - Except I would go further and
say students and faculty should strike until the Trustees do it.

3. I think they are trying to protect current students/athletes who had nothing to do with it.
I'm not saying that is the right thing to do or not, that's their reason, I expect.
As a WVU fan, it's not exactly my nature to be sympathetic of Penn St, but I do feel for the students who registered at Penn St who had nothing to do with this scandal and had this blow up in their faces.
Now the ones who protested in support of Paterno, not so much...

5. Part of me agrees with you, but...
The money-making madness hasn't ended, so refusing to show up only hurts Nebraska. Can't blame them for not wanting to put themselves at a disadvantage. The other team and all of the players should not have to pay for the sins of Penn State's management.

But, I agree with you whole-heartedly about ending the money-making bullshit. I am hoping the NCAA will take this opportunity to make some changes. But, I doubt that will happen.

16. If it wasn't for the money making of college football..
there would be no women's sports because all of them lose money...and the cash that football rakes in helps make up for it..

13. I'm confused. What is wrong with a college making money on sports?
It's entertainment that millions are passionate about. They are happy to spend their money on the school they support. What is wrong with that?

18. But then the "little people" will suffer...
You know, the ones that work the concession stands and take tickets and work security, etc.

Just like the NBA strike....hurting the workers.

I don't know the answer, but if those students hold freaking signs supporting Paterno, I may puke.

32. and that is sad
Sure, he's a legend....but he failed the children in his town. Those Penn State kids are just looking for a reason to have a street party, carry signs, latch onto Paterno and get drunk. IMHO

Wonder what my deceased Dad, who lived and breathed sports, would think about this. My fiance, who also lives and breathes sports, thinks that Paterno should be prosecuted.

20. 18-22 year old young men should not be punished for what aging,
idiotic, power hungry men have done. As sad as it is, life does go on after horrible things happen. There should be blame place where it has been earned, there should be many firings, there should not be riots in the streets, and players should not be wearing white for a hollow man. But, they should play.

21. Offer Current Players Free Transfer To Other Schools...
I'm in the mindset that this program needs to be suspended until all those involved with this massive conspiracy are removed from the program and the school...the rebuild the program from the bottom up. We're dealing with a criminal situation...not recruiting violations...and where the University and the NCAA need to make a strong statement. It's time to reign in the culture that encouraged the enabling of these and other crimes in the name of big money sports and egos. The school should shut down its program for the rest of this season and next year pending the outcome of a full independent investigation into this scandal. All student athletes should have their scholarships honored...and those who chose to go to another school should be able to retain their full eligibility. Time to put the focus back on education and the students.

22. They should cancel the season, take time to reflect on their defective values/misdirected priorities
, and spend the next decade focusing on education.

28. It would be a powerful silent protest.
Against the atrocities suffered by children at the hands of those who were supposed to protect them. A very powerful message could be sent by Penn State (both officials and students) that they care more about these children than about football. (and I'ma very avid football fan) nt

33. At this point, they'd have a heap of lawsuits on their hands if they cancelled.
They should instead go through with the game but leave out all the promotions of Penn State and replace them with apologies and admittance of guilt, followed by the fact that the current students weren't involved.
