Nuke agency reports unusual radiation in Europe

http://news.yahoo.com/nuke-agency-reports-unusual-radiation-europe-134506410.html

The U.N. nuclear agency is reporting "very low" — but higher than usual — levels of radiation in the Czech Republic and elsewhere in Europe.

-snip-

Its statement on Friday said the current levels do not seem to pose a public health risk.

IAEA says the cause is not known, but it is not the result of Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, which spread radiation across the globe in March.

The agency says the radioisotope will lose much of its radiation in about eight days and that the agency is investigating.

1. Iran?
They seem to be picking up the same source over a relatively wide area in Europe.

2. Really?
That's the first place your mind went when someone detects radiation? How many Nuclear reactors and weapons are scattered throughout Europe already and you decided to suggest Iran?

I only hope it is sarchasm.

8. But the monitoring network in Europe is very good
And if it were localized, they should be able to find the source.

If they are finding diffused I-131, it's probably not originating in Europe. They say it is not from Japan. Our network would pick it up if it was in the Americas.

That leaves the most likely sources in Russia or down south, and the winds look more like it would be coming from Iran/Afghanistan? I'm not a meteorologist, so I can't be certain of that.

Russia wouldn't be good. If it is Iran, it is probably from a weapons test, buried, so that wouldn't be too bad. They are saying it is an extremely small quantity, which is somewhat reassuring.

11. Sources
I want sources citing prevailing wind patterns and matching it up to this phenomena percisely before I will accept ridiculous speculation like this.

Again, hundreds of nuclear plants, waste sites, and weapons in Europe. One nuclear program in Iran. Which is really more likely.

Oh wait, the news says it is higher than the observed low levels in the czech republic. Which basically means its probably a reactor or cold war era radioactive waste. In fact the news media suggested that cracked fuel rods are the most likely source. So why the hell would you foist some absurd nonsense about nuclear Iran. What is yoru bloody motive?

4. I wonder if it is unusual not to know the source
... or they know and want to avoid confrontation for now

5. Well, there was an explosive triple-meltdown at a nuclear power plant complex recently...
And the criticalities are still apparently continuing.

That would be the most obvious suspect.

7. They explicitly note that it's not.
Also, they turned out to be wrong about there still being criticalities.

12. More banal than that
Cracked fuel rods seems the likeliest theory
