Iowa Repub. caucus-goers OVERWHELMINGLY oppose Medicare/SS cuts!
"Likely Republican caucus-goers in Iowa adamantly oppose cuts to Social Security and Medicare in order to reduce the deficit, according to a poll commissioned by the senior advocacy group AARP.

The survey, conducted last month and released Thursday, said 64.5 percent of likely caucus-goers oppose cuts to Social Security while 67.3 percent are against cuts to Medicare.

A quarter of respondents favored cuts to Social Security and 22.3 were for reductions in Medicare, the survey said.

Large majorities of people who took part in the poll also said the programs are or will be important to their retirement income and health care."

3. Heard a guy defending Republicans on WNYC, New York's public radio station...
He called in to argue with George McGovern that the Republicans were not just the party of the elite. I was just shaking my head at his lack of perception.

How anyone who depends on SS and Medicare can claim to be a Republican is beyond me.

4. Even Republicans aren't dumb enough to mess with current beneficiaries
But the temptation to screw over people under age 55 may be too much to resist for Republicans and Democrats alike, and Catfood Commission II is poised, in my opinion, to do just that in the bestest bipartisan fashion. And in 10 years, we can look forward to all the scolding about "greedy geezers" who want a "free ride" and why didn't all those 55 year olds just decide to become investment bankers back in 2011? It's their own fault!

5. Even for the "out" years?

Everyone wants to defend their own benefits, which is why even Republicans don't put those cuts on the table. Screwing over future beneficiaries is what most of us worry about.

Still, this is useful. Good to see the rank-and-file of Team Norquist isn't looking to drown themselves in a bath tub.

7. The GOP candidates will tell them that the Democrats are the
ones who will take their benefits away and many of them will believe it. Grassley won reelection last year in part by saying the Democrats are in favor of death panels. The GOP will lie and twist things and the caucus voters will believe them. Nothing new.

9. Why do they identify as Republicans, then?
If I didn't want the majority of the world to suffer and die, I wouldn't identify myself as a Republican. Because that's what the Republican party stands for.
