A young man faces down the mob at Penn State.
In a sea of chuckleheads, someone with integrity stands up.

Too rare, but awesome to see.

13. Thanks for posting this
Yes, there were knuckleheads rioting, and they didn't do much to help the situation.

But there were also kids having candlelight vigils for the victims. Unfortunately, the rioters got all the press.

Life isn't that black and white. You can't really say "Penn State students" are right-wing, left-wing, knuckleheads or philanthropists - there's a mix of people there as there would be at any state school. This is the same student body that raised $9.5 million last year alone for the Four Diamonds Fund for the families of children with cancer (at a time when other schools are justifiably proud of raising $100,000 for a charity).

I went there, a lot of my friends went there, and many of my friends kids are there now. Some of them are dopey kids who were probably out rioting in support of Paterno, and some of them are great young people who were probably organizing last night's huge candlelight vigil.

I like to think DU folks are able to handle complexity, and see the world as something other than "black vs white".

The people who committed and covered up the abuse are bad (and need to be punished). The students - more of a mixed bag.

9. Well, in my mind, I've come to the conclusion
that those kids at Penn rioting are the children of the same TPs that still love Herman Cain - their hero worship over rides really bad behavior.

That kid has really done some deep thinking in his short life...bravo.

Sometimes, it only takes one courageous person! This student represents the real Penn State...
I'd love to see this young man in a leadership position at Penn State!

17. I quit watching
college and pro football years ago because of this idiotic 'Culture of Football.' It turns mainly males into a pack of feral dogs. It's violent and a MAJOR distraction so to keep primarily males under control and hateful toward women.

In fact, I don't watch any major sports anymore....too many rapists have been let off the hook because they're 'sports stars.'

I watch the Olympics and that's about it.

If dudes were only one tenth as interested in our democracy as they are football, it would be a better world.

And yes, I know, not all men go wacky over football....but just look at the media coverage of Paterno and Penn St. It even dominates 'The Ed Show' which I turned off because of the coverage.

Football stars can get away with anything. And I hope they take those wins away from Paterno that made him the winningest coach of all time. He doesn't deserve them.

The sexually assaulted children should receive tons of money and therapy to help them deal w/ what the Culture of Football did to them.

19. Any male-centric group can result in that
Sports can be a big offender when it comes to misogyny, but if you look at other male groups, you'll find largely the same dynamic. For example, online gaming is filled with misogyny. And since it's online and anonymous, it tends to be even worse. A lot of females I know are reluctant to reveal their sex in online games because of the unwanted attention and commentary that often results.

I have my theories about why that is. You often see the formation of these attitudes in competitive environments, where there's a lot of subconscious and overt peen comparing going on. The more fierce the competition or desire to be the alpha dog, the more you see women-denigrating attitudes generated.

It's a strange little dynamic.

20. It is NOT
a strange 'little' dynamic. It's patriarchy and patriarchy is misogynist. Our culture keeps devolving further and further into violence.

Maybe these alpha dog gamers will make great little soldiers when WW3 starts. Then they come home slathered in PTSD.

Look at my name at DU....big mistake. The 'fem' gets me in trouble. I don't blame women for using a non-gender name.

Violent games....what a waste of human potential.

But I saw the writing on the wall....time to arm oneself against the knuckle-dragging dog packs.

...the football team. If they were disciplined for bullying the school would be legally required to ban the bullies from school sports, and that was deemed unacceptable. :grr:
