$5,000 Fines for Spililng Milk? Rep. Hunter's Office Can't Show Examples

Office of GOP congressman also unable to document his efforts to free small businesses of taxes.

By Ken Stone

Rep. Duncan D. Hunter on Monday called for deregulation, saying it’s “impossible” to keep up with rules on the city, state and federal levels.

He cited an EPA edict: “Literally, if you spilled milk on your factory floor, it’s considered an oil spill, and you could be fined—and people were fined, hundreds of companies—$5,000 a day for spilled milk.” (See video.)

{snip}

But Hunter’s office in Washington and a spokeswoman for the Environmental Protection Agency have been unable to document anyone paying a fine for spilled milk.

At the same time, Hunter spokesman Joe Kasper couldn’t list current legislation that would eliminate all taxes for small businesses—as asserted by the Republican congressman Monday.

Looks like Hunter got caught telling a whopper! Not the first time he's told a bald-faced lie to constituents.

He has a guy running against him who is feisty, progressive, and sounds like an honest working man. Read about David Secor here: http://www.eastcountymagazine.org/node/7801

1. Dick Armey always used to tell a story about a janitor named Charlie
back when he was a professor at the university (I forget which one), Armey says after the mean old liberals raised the minimum wage, Charlie lost his job.

A reporter did some investigative journalism (yeah, remember that?) and found no evidence of a janitor named Charlie when Armey worked at that university.

2. If you dump a whole truckload of milk into a creek negligently you might get fined $5000
Especially if it killed a bunch of protected fish or something.

But on a factory floor - bullshit. The factory will have, as required by law, drains and waste treatment capable of handling it, and it will get washed away.

You also might get fined if you do something really stupid-assed like leave it on the floor for a month to rot.

4. There's a cheese plant a few hours south that got fined for spraying excess milk on nearby fields.
But we're not talking a little milk, we're talking about a rancid milk smell for miles and miles and undrinkable water.
