Sorry if someone's posted this before, but this commercial just PISSES ME OFF. (and I don't get really pissed that often...)

10. I hate those "Man Up" Miller Lite commercials more
Edited on Mon Nov-14-11 01:49 PM by booley
The above can at least be said to be sarcastic.

The TV commercial is MANLY because there are explosions and car chases and .. did I mention the explosions! And the main actor is unshaven because real men who are manly have no time for hygiene! Not when there are MANLY things to do. Like drive cars through explosions.

At least it's self mocking as I see it.

But the miller lite is right at the level of high school a-holes taunting guys because they are insecure about their man hood. If you don't drink this beer then it must be because you're not a man

I mean, is that what masculinity is supposed to be about? Mindless conformity? Screw that!

It's insulting for a bartender, even a fake on on TV, to presume to tell me what beer I can and can't drink.

Well, yeah. That's what tradition says. And now advertisers use that built-in idiocy to prey on people's insecurity to get them to buy things. It's pretty pathetic, really... many would hardly ever be swayed by such nonsense. But children see these ads too, and many of them absorb the message.

Advertisers are getting away with negatively impacting society simply because nobody seems too interested in paying any attention to the problem, let alone doing anything about it.

...so what, you aren't a man unless you drink Miller Shiite? I don't think so....

If you drink that refrigerated gnat's piss and still think it a) makes you manly and b) is real beer you have bigger problems than women laughing at you and your buddies thinking you're a bit of a berk....

The funny way to do it is the Dos Equis 'Most interesting man in the world' ads...

Edited on Mon Nov-14-11 04:44 PM by Fawke Em
Most of the women I know - myself included - have given up soft drinks, all together and switched to Perrier or just plain water. Soft drinks are lab vials of disease-producing muck.

It's become so popular around here that the Walgreens is now selling individual plastic bottles of Perrier in the individual soft drink aisle!

problem perspiration (with strong odor, fresh from the shower, even after scrubbing with antibacterial soap) I could identify with that slogan.

No deodorant was ever strong enough unless it was something like Right Guard. But who the hell wants to smell like they've bathed in cheap men's cologne? I hated the stuff.

I want something that's going to handle "man-sweat" while still smelling nice.

Maybe some women don't sweat that much from their armpits. Maybe some don't even "perspire". Or...in the words of our great-grandmothers...have a "glow".

I do.

Oh, and I'm large/tall, so I have to buy a lot of my clothing in the mens department.

68. It's a marketing-created problem
Marketing departments have spent the last few decades marketing "diet" stuff to women. They ignored men. As a result, a lot of the public thinks "diet" means "for women". So they're trying to counter that with macho stuff "for men".

It's also happened with things like body wash, shampoo and perfume/cologne. Again, marketing spent all their effort going after women. Someone realized there's another half of the population to market to, so we get products like Axe. Same stuff in a dark, manly bottle instead of a pastel bottle.

But as to your central point, no it's not insulting. It's more insulting that they were previously claiming these products were only for women. At least they're paying attention to men now.

55. firstly, i would like to say, in this house we address them. why?
because i hear a lot of men use this very condition in identifying who they are cause for them, there is a pay off. just as a lot of women will do that their worth is in there look and sexuality.

and i wanted to make it clear to my boys the conditioning of both gender. not one or the other. both. and the expense of their authenticity.

and dont allow society to stop you from doing what you want, because they have deemed it is not what your gender is meant to do.

i agree, and we dont do well with those ads in our house.

54. IF it's "sexist" at all...
like some here are claiming, I think it would be sexist in the respect that it portrays grown men as nothing more than giant 8 year olds.

Which, now that I think of it, isn't too far off the mark in most cases.

Anyway, I think it's amusing. Guys making fun of themselves. Like (OH THE HORRORS!!!!) they have a sense of humor...

Really...isn't there more serious stuff in the world to be outraged about than a damned commercial?

72. Well, fortunately...
they didn't put up women for men to shoot.

And as far as shooting high heels goes...

I would shoot them too. They are one of the prime reasons why my feet and knees are in such bad shape now.

Whenever I see women wearing those things, which I think are objects of torture, I cringe. Because I know what's likely to happen to their feet if they keep wearing them.

Lipstick...I like it, but I hear lots of men don't. Back when I was in HS, a boy said he really liked me but would never ask me out or be my boyfriend because of my shiny/glossy lipstick. He thought it was gross.

61. Alienating half of your audience is a bad way to launch a product.
Remember the McDonald's Arch Deluxe?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arch_Deluxe

Advertising

McDonald's hired Fallon McElligott, a Minneapolis-based advertising agency known for unconventional work, for its staggering $100 million ad campaign. Arch Deluxe ads were notable in that, unlike other fast-food ads, they did not really talk about the quality of the food. They primarily consisted of young children who would look at the seemingly complex burger and say "I don't get it", or "I don't understand what the big deal is." Some would even call the burger "yucky" or complain that "you don't even get a toy with that!" This line of indirect rebel advertising was very similar to The Coca-Cola Company's marketing for OK Soda two years before, which was also a flop. Steve Burns, who would later host the Nickelodeon children's show Blue's Clues, performed the voice-over for at least one of the commercials in the series.

McDonald's widely distributed coupons allowing the purchase of the otherwise expensive Arch Deluxe for only $1.00. When studies showed that its first set of advertising was unsuccessful, and was possibly even hurting its existing branding, it switched to a more conventional McDonald's-style commercial, featuring Ronald McDonald doing adult activities, such as playing golf and dancing at a night club.

The Secret deodorant tagline, "Strong enough for a man, but made for a woman," that The Straight Story posted above is inclusive, yet still markets toward one group.

What I find curious is why Dr. Pepper found it necessary to use this male-oriented campaign.

62. It's awful

I guess the idea was that some men believe diet drinks to be effeminate, and some idiot marketer thought that this would expand the market for diet drinks by reaching those men.

However, that has to be such a narrow market segment that, as you suggest, turning off anyone ELSE who might try it is foolish.

Then again, this is the same company that advertised on the basis of requiring membership in a community of people who dance, poorly, in the streets:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvCTaccEkMI

I'm guessing most people want a soft drink instead of an identity.

76. And there are women who happily use "men" stuff.
Doesn't change that marketing has been very effective at driving men away from diet beverages. An overwhelming percentage of "diet" beverages are drunk by women, and an equally overwhelming percentage of "regular" beverages are drunk by men.

Finally aiming a diet soda at my gender isn't terribly offensive. However, the flavor of Dr. Pepper is terribly offensive so I'm not about to buy any.

Or was it Fresca? (Fresca means "fresh" (feminine form) in Portuguese, Spanish and Italian.)

Why hasn't "lite" beer gotten the same "girlie" treatment? I don't see many men concerned about being perceived as feminine for drinking Bud Light.

They should be embarrassed to drink Bud Light because it's piss water, however.

78. Mostly because "lite" beer doesn't have fewer calories, and still has 'macho' advertising
Lite beer is lighter in color and less bitter. It does not necessarily have fewer calories. The advertising campaigns for it also have remained macho.

If I remember correctly, Tab was one of the first diet sodas. Indeed it was marketed heavily to women. But the folks at the soda companies realized that creating an entirely new brand was harder than making a diet version of their regular soda. So Tab faded away to be replaced by Diet Coke. It was still heavily marketed towards women.

It also has 2.4% ABV, making it slightly more alcoholic than tap water.

Their ad campaign pushes the fact that one can drink MORE because it has less calories! Of course, it doesn't get you drunk or even taste good. It's just mindless consumption.

Edit to add: I know a manly man who drinks Bud Select 55. He's a heavy drinker who drinks a lot of Bud Select 55 because they're one third/one half of the calories of regular beer.

64. I wonder how the viewing public would feel about a car commercial
With a tagline something along the lines of -- "If you've got size issues, buy this BIG car to compensate"

I'll bet you'd see a shitstorm of complaints. But women are subjected to all sorts of negative stereotypes by marketing groups -- ie, the wicked MIL, the skanky groupies hanging off a man who is old enough to be their grandfather because he drinks a certain beer, etc.

The Dr. Pepper ad pisses me off too. It's just plain juvenile.

How's about a different tact -- you want me to buy your product, be respectful to everyone.

94. Those commercials already exist.
While they don't explicitly say "size issues", it is made clear that a large or powerful car (or more likely truck) will make you more manly.

As for negative stereotypes about women in advertising, I assure you my gender isn't portrayed flatteringly either. It seems like nearly 1/2 of TV ads include either an idiot male or a "man-boy" who's juvenile antics are barely tolerated.

It seems like today's advertising people can't come up with a way to market a product unless they can insult someone.

Then again I don't find really anything offensive, certainly not a commercial, and under the opinion too many people have far too thin of skin.
There are often commercials that portray men and women in a stereotypical light and most of the time I find them funny because I can either sympathize or know someone like that.

It's funny because either we can, in some way, relate to it or know someone who fits that stereotype. While you say sexist ideology I say fitting and a little humorous look at occasional human/gender tendencies.
Looking at some of the portrayals of men in commercials or television. Many times it's some spin off of Tim Allen's character on the show Home Improvement but it's funny and sometimes true. No sense in pretending otherwise.
