Natalie Hedegdus, Mom kicked out of courtroom for breastfeading.

Huff Post.

Apparently, feeding your child is something to be ashamed of -- at least according to one district court judge. Michigan resident and mother of a 5-month-old baby, Natalie Hegedus, was reportedly "called out" for breastfeeding in front of an entire courtroom, leaving her humiliated and in tears

Writing on the community forum, BabyCenter, after the incident, Hegedus said she only brought her son to court in the first place because he had an ear infection. As they were waiting to be called, he got hungry -- and so naturally, she decided to feed him. Hegedus says her breasts were fully covered and she was sitting at the back of the courtroom.

When the court bailiff noticed what she was doing, WoodTV reports that he wrote a note to the judge about it. Hegedus was called up, and the judge asked her whether she believed it was appropriate to be breastfeeding in court. She shared her response with WoodTV:

"Considering the fact that my son is hungry, and he's sick, and the fact that it's not illegal, I don't find it inappropriate ... And the judge said something to the effect of 'It's my court, it's my decision and I do find it inappropriate.'"

2. There's one jackass who needs to be thrown off the bench in 2012
or whenever he comes up for reelection. That qualifies as misconduct, IMO, but too many men are squeamish about seeing their favorite toys used for their intended purpose to impeach the asshole.

4. Who TF is unreccing this.
It's a natural function and study after study prove that breast feeding, if possible, is the single best thing a mother can do to ensure and healthy baby (assuming shelter, etc).

It's natural, it good for the mother and child, it isn't illegal, and it makes for future liberals (OK I added this part but it makes sense because breast fed kids seem to be calmer and more focussed and less fearful, thus natural liberals).

Who was this judge, Clarence Thomas?

7. well..
a sick child belongs at home in his own bed..not in a courtroom, where he can be exposed to even more germs that might take up residence since he's already ill.

If she was not on the jury, a defendant or witness, perhaps she could have skipped court-watch & stayed home with her sick baby.

I have no problem with mothers feeding their babies, but I am a little weary of the "envelope pushers" who seem to delight in making this an issue everywhere they can.
In every court setting I have ever seen, there are lots of benches/chairs in the areas just outside the actual courtroom.

It's also a bit of a surprise that they let her bring the baby inside to begin with.. Judges do not like disturbances in their courtrooms, and a baby is a disturbance just waiting to happen.

9. "As they were waiting to be called," .... I'm assuming this mean she was part of the court
proceedings, and was waiting to be called upon for something.

17. envelope pushers

wow.

This woman was in court for a case she was part of, and had missed an earlier hearing on the matter. Had she not shown up - because her baby was sick - she would be in contempt of court.

Mothers and fathers of infants have THOSE INFANTS as their top priority. A good judge understands that. To make her out to be some militant because she was feeding her child is just absolutely laughable, really.

I hate when women hate and shame breasts. I really do.

Some days it sickens and disgusts me to see what our culture really is.

Breastfeeding = Bad. WHAT THE FUCK??????

8. i'm not defending the judge, but traditionally they have had a LOT
of leeway in deciding who or what is or isn't allowed in the courtroom...Some of them are power-mad and take it to extremes -- I've known a few people kicked out or sent to jail overnight for contempt for much less than this...

11. WE are one of only a handful of societies

ever in HISTORY to criminalize breastfeeding. To make breasts something shameful and dirty for babies.

It's insane and the ultimate in human immaturity, really. It's like living in crazy land if you have boobs (or if you're an infant, for whom nature designed said boobage.)

Shame and misogyny rule this land. I really wish we could grow up...

13. That's what mine did!

My breasts would like to issue this statement:

"We stand in solidarity with all other human mammae in stating that while we do not mind being admired, or multi-purposed, or used to make a buck here and there by those persons with fantabulous boobs, our main biological purpose is NOT in fact, to sell beer, Harleys or lingerie.

Our main biological function is to provide sanitary, portable, safe, milk allocation to human infants. No one is forced to use us for infant human nutrition, but to deny us our natural occupation is PISSING MOTHER NATURE OFF bigtime. Hint: Don't piss off Mother Nature! She will Occupy your immature, selfish, ignorant selves, we're warning you!"

:)

14. Well, that's one way to get out of jury duty...
all kidding aside, anyone called for jury duty knows that they can't just leave. You are basically stuck there until they choose or not choose you.

the poor woman.

19. Courtroom protocol is a lot more stringent than that for
society at large. I worked for two Minnesota district court judges and I don't think either would have allowed this in the courtroom. If people who are in the courtroom need to talk to each other, or do what this woman was doing, the proper thing to do is excuse oneself quietly from the courtroom and tend to your business in the adjoining hallway. If your presence is required when you are out of the courtroom a bailiff or court clerk will come out and tell you so.

There are plenty of things you can't do in a courtroom that you can do in the lobby of the courthouse: chewing gum, drinking soda, chatting with the person in the next seat, having your cellphone on. Nothing here to be outraged about, so calm the hell down, people.
