None of our coaches in high school ever joined us kids for a shower. They always had their own personal shower.

How was it where you went to school?

3. Nope. No coaches in the shower. Lots of stupid people in the
shower, though. Lots of taunts for the less athletic kids, the overweight kids, and the kids who hadn't hit puberty yet. It wasn't a pretty thing. I fell into normal ranges at every age, and didn't get picked on, but some kids were picked on constantly. Communal showers aren't the best idea, I think.

4. I was a member of a squash / racquetball club as a youth in the late 70's...
which had a large communal shower in the men's locker room. I'm sure that adults and junior members all showered together. It wasn't a big deal.

But I don't remember any "horseplay"

5. I didn't play anything in college
but would have totally freaked if I saw a naked coach in the room or anywhere else. Not to mention that an adult should NEVER EVER be alone with a child he's not related to under any circumstances, for the adult's protection as well as the child's. My kid is in Boy Scouts and they drill that message in to all the parents. You just don't do it.

11. Bingo
If you run a program for children, especially pubescent children, you WILL have pedophiles trying to participate. And no, you won't know who they are. They will most likely be the most beloved, most like, most generous, and most self sacrificing members.

If you run a program such as this, the rules should be clear. NO, solo interaction, AT ALL. "Two adult" rule at all times. The CLOSEST exception is when adults give teens a ride in a car. And THAT should be only a case where a single adult gives rides to MULTIPLE teens, simultaneously.

And good God, there is NO excuse for solo NUDE activities like showering or "horse play". No sharing of hotel rooms. Heck, almost any "summer camp" will have a multitude of rules on these things. No small part of "junior counselors" was specifically so that the adults were never "alone" with kids. My job as junior counselor was to be the disciplinarian/enforcer so that the adult didn't have to. _I_ was the one to "lay hands on" the kids, and THEY were the ones to control ME.

Really, if you run a church group, participate is scouts, or volunteer at a school, there should be plenty-o-rules to govern these situations. They protect EVERYONE, especially the kids, but you too.

13. Yes. Properly run youth organizations follow those rules.
If those rules aren't followed, it's almost certain that pedophiles are involved in the organization. Parents should review all rules before allowing their children to be part of any such group. Even better, parents should volunteer with such organizations so they can see that the rules are followed.

Adults who prey on children are always looking for youth organizations with lax rules.

9. They showered with us in a large common shower. Sometimes
they'd hide behind a wall and would snap a towel on us as we left the shower. One would spend an inordinate time washing his junk. He'd stand there in the middle, in full view massaging his junk. He was really violent and would knock us around. Most of us were shell shocked from his treatment. Never heard of any sexual contact with any of the team. We had other teachers for that.

10. I played football from 5th through 12th grade
and 4 years of high school baseball. That's well over 25 years ago, but I do recall in high school that our assistant coaches sometimes showered after practice. We didn't have the greatest facilities so there weren't any other showers. I don't ever remember it being considered "creepy" or really even thinking twice about it.

14. I didn't play but saw it in high school, sort of...
There was a huge public shower, and a smaller one, and a stainless-steel jacuzzi sort of thing with a scary-looking boat propeller in a screened shield, all in the same big room. AFAIK the teachers and coaches used the small shower, but so did some sports players - injured ones, for example.

15. We had a female coach once
and we had "group showers" with mandatory showering after PE.

She used to watch us....was very creepy. We were in High School. This was in the 70's.

We started sprinting in from the fields, jumping in and getting hair wet and jumping out before she could make it in...but really unsure what all of that was about.

16. Never....but this one hairy troll like football coach...
Use to stand outside of his coach door where their lockers and office were and yell at us to hurry up and get outta the locker room...so he could go home...

He did this while he held a towel between his legs and pulling the front and back of the towel cleaned out his hairy filthy ass...the towel would come out quite un-white...

that 8 th Grade Football image was idelibly pressed int0o my memory and makes me gag to this day...I think it put me off coming out for sometime...

17. Absolutely not, never once.
Coaches were not even in the locker room after the end of practice...in fact, I can never recall a single instance the coaches even entering the shower area while it was in use. To do so would be creepy as hell and would certainly have been seen as a coach with a problem and someone who had no business being around children or young adults, period, full stop.

19. No on coaches. But group mandatory showers--

monitored somewhat by the coach/teacher--were routine for PE classes way back when.

Seems to me that the whole concept of showering at school has changed across the years. Younger people sound shocked at what was
unquestioned for years. Same with nude swimming, apparently.

Being a YMCA/YWCA day camp counselor. We often took the kids to the swimming pool. They had to shower after they were done. We were not allowed to shower with them. Camp Rules. So after they came out.. and were finished the Counselors could shower in private. There was one closed off stall for staff only.

29. In the early 90s
I was in a summer program at a local university. The coach would regularly shower in the communal shower afterwards. Us being suburbanites long unfamiliar with showering after gym class, we just sort of stared. It seemed odd. A few of us would sort of mill around until he was finished, then shower in our trunks.

It wasn't necessarily that it was creepy. It was just embarrassing to those of us who lived after a time when showering in front of other people was a common thing.

Never had any odd experiences like that. Glad of that too.

My mother always discouraged my brother and I to avoid being alter boys too. Even though to this day she is a devout Catholic. Never quite understood that back then. Think I do now though. And that was back in the early 60's. I don't think she ever fully trusted priests now that I think back on it.
