Get off your ass, get an education, get a job, and become the 1%
This is something I've been hearing on occasion... are people really that stupid? Hello, it's called math. The 99% can't become the 1%.

I... it's pointless. Whatever. :banghead:

2. The best way and most common way of becoming a 1%er is to be born one. nt

11. Pretty much.
I did what I was supposed to do. Even though I was from a working class family I went to college at my home state's main university, graduated with highest honors and went on to an Ivy League law school, the one in Massachusetts, where I did quite well and went to a prestigious law firm in my hometown.

Two years after I graduated I was working in a bookstore for minimum wage. Three years ago I was scrounging the dumpster in my apartment building for uneaten pizza and eating what I found. There were days when my cat ate and I didn't. A significant part of my fall from grace was that I was eventually diagnosed Asperger's. But just as significant a part of it was that I was not born a 1%er and was blackballed with other employers by my first employer.

24. Probably
There would have come a point where I just would have walked out anyway. I can't do that kind of shit. Oh, big corporation slugging it out with big corporation is one thing, but screwing the people? Not this cowboy.

After a number of very down years I am working as a research attorney at a firm that represents injured (and almost exclusively union) railroad workers. Now that is something I can enjoy doing even if I will never be a multi-millionaire like a large percentage of my classmates, one of whom was instrumental in Murdoch's purchase of the WSJ, and on the Murdoch (arrrr!!) side. How in the FUCK do people like that look themselves in the eye in the mirror every morning? Beats the hell out of me.

5. Yeah, like that.
And specifically saying get a job and become the 1%, and if you're not in the 1%, blame yourself for being lazy... with that horrible attitude, 99% of the population is lazy. Seriously?

The main thing about being in the 1% is that there are 99% below you.

9. I have a job
and, with four degrees, probably more education than 99% of the 1%. But I'm one of those lazy teachers you've heard so much about, so it's my own fault that I haven't had a raise in four years and lost my house.

10. I'd love to get a job
And I would IF....

The companies around here weren't so cliquish.
If I was a Christian.
If there were jobs to be had.
If the companies would stop hiring temps and let people have long term jobs in order to save a few $.
If the companies would hire people my age and stop looking for twenty-ish workers.

12. I get your point.
I feel you're being a little bit too literal. I mean they're stupid, there's no doubt about that. But I don't think that's really the right situation to bring math into it.

19. No, I think it's quite demonstrative of their thinking
OK, maybe they're not saying 99% can become 1% literally, maybe they're saying you can become as rich as the 1% if you're just not lazy. Well, the math behind that notion is equally absurd. The income gap is ridiculously huge, and class mobility is at the lowest it can be in a (functioning democracy?)

Maybe they're the top if you are just counting money, but when it comes to morals, compassion or just being a freakin' human being, they are the bottom.

The one that says the real reason socialism never took root in this country is that most Americans think of themselves as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.

31. "...and become the 1%"
....most people I've ever known, get up, go to work, do what they need to do, come home, have a few beers and generally, wish to be left alone....no one I've ever known had a burning desire to become part of the 1%....99%ers itching to become 1%ers is a myth....

....there are some 99%ers who like the 'cover' of the 1%....for example, 'if they won't tax rich, they won't tax me' or 'if the rich on top are free, I'll be free' but as we all know, it doesn't work like that....in fact, it works exactly opposite to that....

....if everyone could be 1%ers, then being a 1%er would render you part of the 99%....
